Can anyone tell me why the text message stock app does not notify me?

I rather liked the UI of the stock text messaging app, but it does not give me notifications.  For example, I have it set to notify and to show a pop-up but it does not make the notification ringtone, nor does it pop-up.  It sometimes, but not faithfully, shows a text icon in the status bar and sometimes will show a number 1 on the icon itself.  More often than not, I have to open the app to discover any new text messages.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks for the heads up, brandus. Although I haven't experienced this before, I would like for you to go to Settings>Application manager>All>Messaging and force stop/clear data on just the Messaging Application. After that is done power cycle the device and then test the notifications again.

Also, are you connected to WiFi when this happens?
