DROID Users, Your input please.

Hi folks,

First I hope your day is going great, and I have just a few questions for you guys -- consise, well thoughtout feedback/answered questions are appreciated:

How do you feel about the keyboard? Do you have trouble typing on it? Do you find it annoying? Good? Easy to work with?
The actual speed of the phone -- we all know the specs on it are great, however, when it comes to the actual execution of it, do you feel like it lives up to it's standards?
Overal, how was/is your experience with the Droid? Would you recommend it others?
Do you think the Droid is worth the switch over to the Verizon Network?
And lastly, given Design, Hardware, Software, and Ease of Use on a scale from 1-10, 10 being Perfect, what would you rate it?

The keyboard is fair... it is not easy to use, but it works. It is not as good as my LG Envy2, and in comparison to the Envy, it wastes a whole row that could have numbers. I would happily trade a milimeter of thickness on the phone for a raised keyboard

Opening apps, using apps, etc... speed is great. No problems. Love the GPS, Love Google Sky (downloaded). The web browser is OK, works... but I do wish that Flash was available. I do wish the camera was slightly better.

Overal, how was/is your experience with the Droid? Would you recommend it others?

I do love my device, but that is because I like having internet, facebook, games, youtube, etc... all where I can carry it in my pocket or purse. However, At this point, I have to say NO. Unfortunately, phone calls are almost impossible because on 75% of my phone calls, while I am talking, the phone mutes itself (but not via the mute button) and makes it where I can hear the person on the other line, but they cannot hear me. I feel a slight vibration when this occurs. My only option is to end the call and retry the call. This happened 6 times today. I only had 8 calls. It's great that I can look at the sky with my phone, but if I cannot make and keep a call, then the phone is not going to be kept.

Do you think the Droid is worth the switch over to the Verizon Network?

If the above issue with the phone call features was resolved, then it would be worth it to STAY with Verizon. If this is not resolved, then it will not be worth it and I may go back to my old Verizon phone, and eventually move on to ATT for the iphone.

And lastly, given Design, Hardware, Software, and Ease of Use on a scale from 1-10, 10 being Perfect, what would you rate it?

I would say a 5. It is pretty simple, however there are lots of steps to place a call. I do not know which app has a message. Texts are not marked clearly on the phone. Missed calls are not clearly marked on the front of the screen. You have to go thru multiple steps to see if you have a missed call/text/email. Go to menu, go to notifications, then you see that you have text, email, vmail, missed call. It would be so much better if the email icon or text icons had a number on it that says you have 2 new messages.

1) Keyboard is a bit worse than my HTC Touch Pro but not by much. Still better than typing on the touchscreen tough. I'm thinking a better keyboard would've made the device thicker - a fair tradeoff IMO. One improvement they could make immediately is taking the numbers off the top row and grouping them as other phones do.

2) It's slower than the iPhone 3GS but not by much, which is understandable given that it's pushing 2.6x as many pixels. Still better than my Touch Pro. There's room for improvement in speed, but it's not a major turn off right now.

3) Absolutely I'd recommend it. There's definitely a learning curve from the iPhone because of the great increase in customization but all the functionality I needed from both the iPhone and WinMo are there, just executed in a better way.

4) I already had a simple flip phone from Verizon because of the signal reception. Haven't had a smartphone with Verizon since the old (5 years ago) Samsung WinMo days. I'm glad to finally get a smartphone on this network that's good enough to use on a daily basis without Verizon gimping it in some way.

5) Hardware is a solid 9. Software has some bugs to be worked out, maybe a 7. Ease of use is about a 9 (if you're a newbie to smartphones, maybe a 6).

I've had the Droid for 2 days - it is great!! My first smartphone so I've adapted very easily to one touch alpha texting (so glad to not have multi-key strokes for my messaging!! Love Google Voice. The physical keypad is a breeze so far; the soft keypad is working well - though I've not used it a lot, except for dialing when I'm not in a place that I can use voice dialing. Reception, according to all I've spoken with on this MOTO Droid is crystal clear. Love the screen, am in the process of draining the battery 2ice and fully charging to get the best batt. life - someone told a cust service rep about this and they relayed it to me. Love the apps - docs to go, pandora, and love the Advanced App killer - so simple! Browser works great, speedy. Haven't sync'd my fb yet; but my gmail and AOL are working great as far as email goes. Had to make three visits to the V store to get all my contact loaded though! Not sure, but that may have been their inexperience, rather than any tech issue. Thanks for all your helpful tips! It's larger than my treo, so it took me a bit to get used to. Unlike others, I find it quiet easy. I can clearly differentiate the buttons by touch. I use the on-screen keyboard for single words, but slip open the physical keyboard for anymore than that. The on-screen can't compare. At first was hitting the pointer pad a lot, but I'm used to it know and that's not a problem.

I was on a Treo 650... so this rocks. But I know that's not really a valid comparison. All I can say is I don't feel like response is slow.

My experience has been good and I have recommended it. There are a bunch of little things I find annoying, but overall it's a solid deivice that delivers on most of what it promises. All my issues are with software choices, so hopefully those will be fixed in the future.

I didn't switch, but if was an AT&T customer on an iPhone and I actually wanted to make calls, I'd switch. It's a different device, and it's not perfect, but neither is the iPhone. They both have issues, it's just which issues are you willing to live with.

8 I think there are a lot of great things about the phone, but "they" have made some really odd usability choices. Why disable 2 point touch? why can't is simply swipe to scroll through pics in the gallery? Why can't I swipe to the side to advance through my email? There are definitely some navigation issues throughout; places where they don't take advantage of the gestural control.

Keyboard is cumbersome and difficult to use. Annoying.

Touch selection feature is inconsistent. Call quality is unacceptable even after using *228. Now I have clicking and still the people on the other end can't hear me consistently. I am wondering if I need to do *228 again when I drive to another city? While I was updating my roaming, the sound was scratchy and clicking. Is my wireless network conflicting with my phone reception?.... I am going to have to return this phone and go back to my non-smart phone that is...smarter. There are no easy indicators for data coming in. You need to sift through things. The phone elements are too deep in the process for me.

Not worth switching if you have a decent plan and good hardware already.

More responses are appreciated, however, thank you all that did respond! This helps, as since I'll be creating a video for you all to enjoy I'll be able to discuss different opinions on the Droid/Eris.

* Honestly, the keyboard was weird to me at first. I used to have a T-Mobile G1 which had spaced-out keys with plastic in between them. I have since (in the last week) grown used to the keyboard and I feel that I can type on it just as fast as I could on the G1 keyboard. Sometimes when I'm just quickly responding to a text message I'll use the on-screen keyboard because the Droid keyboard doesn't quickly pop out like the G1 did, making it harder to open one-handed.

* The actual speed of the phone seems to meet expectations. Even though the processor clock rate isn't that much higher than the G1, it flows through the user interface with ease and I rarely have to wait for things to open/close. This is a huge step forward from the G1 and Android 1.5/1.6. - Also, the battery life is ASTOUNDING compared to any other Android/Windows Mobile device I've ever had!

* My experience has been fantastic, I would highly recommend (and I have) this phone to everyone.

* The main reason I got the droid was to switch to the Verizon Network, there is 3G coverage EVERYWHERE and there are no bottle-necked areas like you experience with AT&T. (iPhone users have been using a lot of bandwidth on the AT&T 3G network bottle-necking it for each other and everyone else), Verizon was prepared for this and their network is the largest and most stable. So, yes you SHOULD in fact switch to Verizon to get the Droid, that’s the only way to get the most out of an Android phone!

* On a scale from 1-10 overall, I would give the Droid a 9. The things I would like to see changed would be the keyboard opening (an assisted open like HTC phones such as the G1 would be nice) and the keyboard could have some spacing between the keys. The key spacing is not a hindrance at all, but would make it easier for people switching from other QWERTY phones to use.

Fair - my last phone was a palm treo 700wx winmo 6.1. That had very small keyboard so I got kind of adept at using it.

Yes and I have been. I have been having several co-workers coming by my cube to check it out and they have been impressed

Keyborad is bit hard to use, rasied and off set keys would've been easier to use, personally wouldn't have minded a thicker device for this feature.

The speed is good, some times the apps lag a little, other times no issues, browser seems to work good too.

so far so good, love the gps/google maps feature, and the speak and search function is amazing! , I would only reccomend to someone if they are willing to deal with the keyboard learning curve, if your in a hurry to type forget it!

since I've been with verizon for a few years now, coverage seems pretty good, never had an issue with customer service, I would say yes!

if the keyboard was better and the camera function was improved, not having the microsd underneath the batt.! it could come very close to a 10, so I'll give it a 6

I've had every single Android phone there is out there -- aside from the Hero (But I've had the Eris).

But I spend the most time with my MT3G, though I did have the Droid/Eris for a while before I had to return them.
