All other search providers removed: required to use bing

Yesterday, all of the search providers that used to be available through the browser disappeared and bing is the only option. I hate bing. I no longer am able to search using Google, Dictionary.com, or Wikipedia from the "Go to..." page on my browser. This is a very poor decision by either RIM or VZW to take choice away from their users. Here is a screenshot of what I'm talking about:

It appears that neither RIM or VZW are willing to admit doing this, but a large number of users are affected, and SOMEONE is pushing this change to Blackberry users without notification and without giving the option to refuse this change. If this has happened to you, please cal Verizon and inform them. I really want my choices for search back. Not only because I hate bing, but because taking choices away from customers is just a really **bleep** thing to do.

I have read this is occurring with the BBM latest upgrade. I upgraded to it but my search choices are still there (for now).

While I don't agree with pushing things onto our phones such as this issue,bling,tones,fried bacon app, whatever there is a quick fix.

Set your home page to whatever site you want (Google for me) and bookmark the other search engines.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the BBM .55 upgrade. I have been running that for a couple of days, but last night VZW pushed new Service Books to my phone after midnight, without asking or telling me they were going to do so, nor did I request them. And just so you know 24 hours earlier I logged onto the vzw.blackberry email site and sent a complete set of Service Books to my phone, that did not make the bing change. So VZW is doing this piece meal, little bit at a time.

Lately I have noticed VZW pushing things to me all without the ability for me to remove or uninstall them if I dont want them. I bought my phone, it is mine I pay them for the service, but that does not give them the right to dictate to me what software THEY want me to have.

Now if RIM had made this part of all of their OS's then that is a whole different ballgame. But they didnt. And yes I can set Google as my home page, but why do I have to do a work around when 24 hours ago I had my phone set-up how I wanted it. But trust me bing is a vastly ineffective search engine, try using it, (if you havent).

But all that aside I am not trying to start a battle amongst us users. But I am throwing in my support that VZW needs to give us our choices back, not dictate. I think that if they had added bing to the list of 4 there wouldnt be this big of a ruckus, mostly people would be happy, as we would still have choice.

I agree with you 100%. I was only saying that I had read where the new BBM caused this but no verification since mine didn't erase the other search engines and advising how to work around it .

I do agree the pushed junk should not be allowed and stated above that I do not agree with it. In my opinion VZW dropped the ball with this search engine deal............PUT THEM BACK PLEASE.

been running .55 bbm and no issues, I still have the google, wikipedia, etc options. I also don't think it has to do with bbm.

MS just lost a huge law suit about its packaging windows OS with IE. Too me its like buying a pair of shoes but being told you cannot supply the laces. The people need to be free to choose their own laces. Same thing here. I do not want another search engine being forced on me. I prefer Googles search engine. I even installed BING and removed it a few days later because I didn't like it. I think Verizon is looking at a huge class action here if they continue to force people to use BING. Wrong on so many levels.

So I called VZW customer service last night. Okay sir I need you to complete a battery pull for me. I tell them okay I can do that but it will not resolve this issue. Well sir unless you try it you will not know. So 4 minutes later, well the battery pull did not work, I still have only BING listed. We have not heard of this problem before sir so we will transfer you to tech support. Tech support played it off as they knew nothing about this issue either. So 15 minutes later and 2 service books resent, I still have BING and no solution to my problem. VZW why don't you find the issue correct it and stop pushing things to our phones unless we accept them. If it is a malware or something then tell your consumers "Houston we have a problem" so at least we know you care. :robotsad:

Verizon TS first told me it's Blackberry thing, not a Verizon one. Then tried to tell me I could reinstall it from a backup. Also tried to tell me it might havbe been an option I selected.

When I said I wanted to complain, he then told me it was Blackberry, not Verizon, that pushed it.

A supervisor then also told me it me the change came from Blackberry, not Verizon.

Round 2 with VZW. Customer service and Tech support claim no knowledge of this happening. Worked on it for 20 minutes with no resolution. Tech support connected me with RIM. RIM read a statement to me that states "VZW has partnered with Microsoft and has pushed BING to the 9550, 9530 and I believe the 9630. You can no longer use the other previous default search engines unless you go directly to their search page. This is a Verizon push and has nothing to do with RIM, I apologize for this inconvenience." So unless you download the Google app you will have to manually type in www.google.com and then search from there. Did I mention VZW is getting stupider as the days progress. At least partner with someone that has a decent search engine. Also why don't you inform your customer service and tech support staff so they can tell you right off the bat instead of wasting 30 minutes with them and still getting zero resolution. **bleep**!

This should definitely be reverted. It should be able choice. Verizon made a statement about a year ago that they were going to be more open with their phones. I guess that wasn't true.

I think I will call them today and let them know what they can do with my wife's BB and service (it involves a place where the sun dont shine).

While I am at it, I should remind that I am a BES Admin with 130 phones in our organization, coming up on a contract negtiation soon. If I can get put through to a retention mamager, remind them that this can be considered anticompetive practive and ask them how they would like an antitrust lawyer breathing down there backs.

I see MS getting another Antitrust suit just like the one they just had and lost over IE. Now MS has to provide a pop up to everyone offering the links to other web browsers. When will they ever learn? Verizon are you paying attention?????

I recently switched from Verizon, and have generally been pleased with the service, support and my new BlackBerry Storm2 device. Earlier today I notice that my preexisting search engine choices had all been removed from the BlackBerry browser and that Bing was my only choice. After calling support and Googling this issue (which turned up this article), it appears that Verizon Wireless has intentionally crippled my device and not only made Bing the default search engine, but removed ALL the other search engines including Google and Wikipedia. Yes, I realize that I can enter www.google.com and search directly from the Google website, but that is an entirely unacceptable workaround for what should not be an in the first place. This is a mobile device with a limited on-screen keyboard, and being able to access something as basic as the ubiquitous Google search engine in as few keystrokes as possible is absolutely crucial. Although I have been generally happy with Verizon in the few weeks I have been with your company, this is a deal breaker. What is more worrisome is that it may be indicative of a general trend. What if next week Verizon Wireless decides that they no longer like Google Maps and limit me to paying for VZ Navigator? What if the week after that Verizon decides I shouldn't be able to use Pandora and forces me to use Slacker? This is an unacceptable business practice, and as your own attorneys can tell you, by selling a device with a certain set of features and later removing those features you are also exposing Verizon Wireless to a great deal of product liability. I will be terminating my service and returning my BlackBerry before the end of my trial period if this is not corrected before then.

This is **bleep**. I noticed the Bing icon on my phone. I cannot remove it. I cannot uninstall it in the applications list or in the App World.

I click I DO NOT AGREE and it still persists on my phone. If I do not agree to the terms, should it not immediately be removed?

Returned my Storm 2 today. My next move is to cancel mine and my families contracts. You know I liked those AT&T commercials. But after this, I will likely be on AT&T service, along with the rest of my family.

There are some jackhole, holier than thow **bleep** at Verizon wearing those blue suits that think they own us (the customer). Well, that is not the case. I voted today with my wallet. Those blue suits should be wearing orange suits instead, if you know what I mean. They have violated a trust with the customer (yet again).

Verizon needs to realize by pushing this on their customers without notification and without a published addendum to their contracts that they are in a bit or a legal issue. Not to mention the antitrust implications of this is the breach of contract by changing service standards without notification. I will gladly join anyone who wants to start a classaction suit against Verizon, to show them that the customer is really the boss.

This is ridiculous Verizon and Microsoft! I even work for a telco but why can't this business ever learn to stop restricting its customers?

I believe that if everyone took the stance below it will make a difference and quickly.

No Bing for me now even though I was beginning to become a fan and no additional Verizon addons/products/apps until I hear that this situation has been remedied in favor of options to the customer.

Hide the BING icon and don't install it and you will be fine. As for those who installed it, have you tried uninstalling Bing? If not grab another OS online and reinstall. 419 is available out there.

If you would read the entire thread you would see that we are not talking about the bing app that VZW pushed out. What everyone is talking about is the search window in the BlackBerry browser where you used to be able to set Google, Wikipedia, or a couple of others.

VZW is in the process of pushing out service books to BB's removing our choice of search engine and only allowing us to use bing, unless we navigate to Google, or install and app that takes us to Google.

Now I know that there are people that like bing, hey great for them, and I am glad to see they have that option available to them. Personally I have never gotten any usable results from bing, compared to Google.

Everyone's post/complaint is passed on our constitutional right to be able to choose, and not have our government or corporate base make our decisions for us.

Now if Google has or had come out and said they no longer were going to allow RIM to have Google listed as an available default search engine, that is one thing, but VZW and MS striking a monetary contract to infringe on my right that is different.

For those of you that think this is all about people just wanking, I am glad you are willing to give up your constitutional rights of choice, but don't infringe on mine.

I was given similar HORRIBLE information from customer service. Not surprising that Verizon didn't equip them with knowledge needed for when I called to ask why this happened. I was told that "search engines cost money". Not entirely sure what that means. First help desk call told me it was "totally RIM's decision, Verizon has nothing to do with it". I asked the woman if she was 100% sure and she said yes.

Called again, was put on hold for 10 full minutes (I jot down these times while on a call) then was directed to tech support wihtout being told where I was going and when I dialed 0 for the operator, it said "Good bye" and the call disconnected.

Finally I spoke to someone, got the run around, no REAL apology. Just a lot of "I understand why you are frustrated"

VZ: Stop sending things arbitrarily to our phones. Don't just push things. Give us a heads up. you are a COMMUNICATION company, please communicate to your customers.

I'll be shopping a new wireless carrier after my contract expires. Shame, because I've had a verizon phone since '98

Hi, all,

First, Happy Holidays to all. Now to business. I have been monitoring the discussions (and there are a bunch just on these forums) concerning the limitation of Blackberry users using the Blackberry Browser to only Bing as a search engine. I am just trying to see what is affected and who is affected so maybe we can figure a way around the problem.

From what I am able to gather, the devices affected are on the Storm and Storm2. I have not seen anyone to my knowledge post with the problem with a Tour or any other device. So, can this be that the 'Bing-only' search option is affecting devices running 5.0 OS? Curious to hear from some Curve 8530 users since those devices use the 5.0 OS. Since I own a Tour, I thus far have not been affected by the problem. I am running the latest 4.7.1.61 OS from Verizon. I also upgraded (again this week) Blackberry Messenger (BBM) to the latest 5.0.0.57 version. I had read somewhere a user thought the BBM upgrade caused the change to his/her search options being changed in the Browser. Not sure on that one, but downgrading to one of the earlier versions of BBM might restore the engines if that was the problem. Previous versions can be found on Blackberry's web site. I really doubt that was the problem, though.

I will be looking around and trying to come up with an answer that might help some of the affected users. In the mean time, if you use your Backberry for searching the internet and do not like the results of Bong...errr Bing, you can always temporarily do a manual search from Google's search page or even other search engine's main page. To go one step further, you can completely disregard the Blackberry Browser and install Opera's mini browser. The latest version is 4.2, however there is a beta 5.0 release that users can download to test, but I have found the 4.2 more stable on my Tour. That way there, for now, Blackberry users can show their protest by not even using the Blackberry Browser at all until the problem is resolved.

Simple solution, if you don't like it, cancel your contract and don't pay the ETF!! Let Verizon take everyone to court, Their the ones Who broke their own contracts by CHANGING YOUR SERVICE WITHOUT PRIOR NOTIFICATION. Been thru this before and they had to pay if you remember. They can push what ever they want to your phone, but can't Change your Service without notification or they are in breech of contract. In which case YOU can cancel without ETF Fee.

Doc, there is now a new release of Opera Mini 5 Beta 2, released within the last two weeks. I had tried the first one, and uninstalled it, but this one is a keeper. Try it, I think you"ll like it!

I D/L it this morning and it seems more stable than the prior beta. I hope some of the Verizon users affected by the Bing-thing will try it. I have found that the Opera version 5 beta 2 offers two search engines by default. I don't think as of now you can add or change to the list of search engines. In the stable release of Opera 4.2 you have at least four options and can add to the list of search engines if you want. I'm sure this option will become integrated into future releases of Opera 5. That leads me back to the purpose of this thread, Verizon users can use Opera or any of the other comparible browsers on their Blackberry and not have Bing thrust in their face as an only option.

My Tour still has all the original search options in the bb browser, Google is my default. VZN pushed a Bing install icon without my consent. Is there a way to completely delete the icon? I have the rogue icon hidden in a folder now and I did not activate the installation of Bing. I don't want my bb violated by Mr.. Softy. Why is VZN pimping us out! Can the security settings be set to prevent these types of pushes or at least give us the option to decline?

I hate this! Very sleazy of VZW, and I HATE BING! Before this change I just didnt prefer to use it, but now I HATE IT.

I admin PCs at work, I sometimes let an IE install slip through without changing the default search to Google, but from now on I will NEVER ALLOW BING (or LIVE on older versions) to go through. I am tempted to block bing at the DNS level.

Technically I could switch our corporate account to another comany to. Our monthly bill is between $5K and $7K. Thats certainly not VZWs biggest account, but not their smalleset either.

I hope somoene uses the BB JDE sofware to code an "app" that is just the old bowser start page re-created (with no Bing, but the ability to add others, like Google.) Can BB JDE get bookmark and history from the browser? If so it should not be to hard for a hobbiest to code....

Thank you for contacting our Verizon Wireless website. I am sorry to learn that you are having difficulty with your Verizon Wireless service, and am eager to assist you with information regarding this issue.

We're a proud supporter of Microsoft's Bing search engine. As you have already experienced, on a couple of select Smartphone’s (Storm 2 the most prominent), we've changed the VZW-supplied web menu to make Bing the default search engine. If you prefer another search engine, simply type in the URL of the search engine you prefer, mark it as a "favorite".

Regarding the ability to opt-out of receiving updates for your device from Verizon Wireless and RIM, there is not a way to do so. However, when you receive the request to accept the update, you are able to hide the icon that populates as a result of the request. When you have followed the below instructions, you will no longer see the request to update your device. Please see, below:

Hiding Icons:

1. From the Home screen, press the Menu button.

2. Highlight the desired icon (e.g. Browser) then press the Menu button.

3. Select Hide.

Un-hiding Icons:

1. From the Home screen, press the Menu button.

2. Highlight any visible icon (e.g. Messages) then press the Menu button.

3. Ensure Show All is enabled. If necessary, select Show All to enable the option. A Checkmarked box indicates that the option is enabled. If Show All is not available, there are no icons currently hidden.

4. Highlight the hidden icon (e.g. Browser) then press the Menu button. A hidden icon will appear gray and transparent.

5. Select Hide to disable the option. A Checkmarked box indicates that the option is enabled.

After reviewing your account and features, we have refreshed all the system settings and have noted that you need to do your *228 feature, option 2, now and approximately every 30 days, hereafter (though it has been updated as recently as 12/12/2009, it is currently outdated):

1. Please dial *228 into your phone and send like a phone call. Choose option 2 when prompted.

2. Listen for the intercept to tell you when this has been accomplished, successfully.

3. If the phone does not reset itself, automatically, please turn it off and turn it back on, manually.

4. Make a test call.

LOL, some guys are just funny and think its the end of the world because its only BING on your browser. Just download the google search app and deal with it. Crying to the government won't do anything because this is BUSINESS. Exclusive deals are signed all the time. Console exclusives, phones being exclusives to other companies, etc...

Just hide the Bing icon on your screen and set Google.com as your home page on your browser. Issue resolved!

Also, if you've read your customer agreement (there's a link at bottom of screen...keep scrolling...) before purchasing the device, you would have noticed it states that Verizon has the right to do this and you agree to it if you purchase the device and service:

Bravo Roni, I was wondering when someone would post the reality of it.

I agree that BING is Crap and I despise the company VZW partnered with to bring us this crap. I think Verizon is over priced and the support is extremely poor, but it works. People don't like change, that is what you are all complaining about. You will never win a CAS no matter who you complain to, because you still have a choice. The complaint is that you have been inconvenienced with that fact that you have to add your choices again. Some of you spent more time complaining about the change with the less then perfect Customer Support call then it takes reset your favorite browser in your favorites or download the Google app.

Of the 2000 + people that have viewed this thread, less the 100 people are **bleep** about it. This tread will be hot for a couple weeks and then it will fade like all the rest. Verizon will never be able to please every one all the time. If the less then 100 people canceled their service and went somewhere else because of BING..... Who fricken cares, because AT&T, Sprint, Cricket, Alltel just **bleep** someone off enough for them to change there service to Verizon Wireless. Its a viscous circle, get over it.

Just found out today that my only option is Bing. This is not acceptable and I sure do hope that everyone keeps the pressure up on Verizon. It was truly a bonehead move on their part to take away choices. I pay lots of money for their service. This isnt something signed up for.

i'm pretty low tech, but on my Storm, I now have a tab for bing that appeared after the software update ran, but when I pull up the browser, Google is still the default search.

Verizon is absolutely no help with Blackberry issues. Poor non technical person like myself has to firgure out how to fix all these problems on my own through community help like this. So frustrated, and I hate bing as well, not able to be removed searched everywhere for a way to take it off.

Also this is Illegal-Microsoft knows they get sued on a constant basis and pay the fines-I guess VZW will have to learn. I know a lawyer who is always hired to deal with Microsoft on class action Suits. This is what I filled out on my form

As I posted above, Verizon is in breech of contract by doing this, They didn't notify us, They can't claim it as an add on because they removed and blocked our choices we had. So yup, If you want to leave they can't legally charge you a ETF. Because their OWN customer agreement states so. I also think any compatant Judge would look at what they have done, (Shady to say the least) and throw their case out.
