texting to Canada

I bought a prepaid plan for my daughter. It is on the Basic plan with the $20 bundle for unlimited texting (and 25 cents/min phone calls). I have 2 questions. Does anyone know the answer?

1. Can she text to Canada from here (US) for no charge?

2. When we visit Canada, do I understand correctly that messages she sends to friends in the US would be charged at 25 cents/min and texts received would cost 20 cents each (in addition to probably being charged 69 cent roaming charges/text)?

I have searched and searched online for the answer and it seems like I get conflicting answers.

One of my friends warned me that I should confirm the info I got, just in case. I contacted Verizon and they confirmed that w/ my plan I CANNOT text for free to Canada. Here is what Jeff, the representative told me:

"The $20.00 text bundle provides Unlimited Messaging to anyone on any network in the U.S. only.

While traveling in the U.S.,Canada, Dominican Republic, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico text messages sent to non-U.S. phone numbers of participating carriers will not be applied against any monthly text messaging allowance and are charged the following:

$0.25/address sent

$0.20/message received

Text messages sent to phone numbers in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico are charged domestic rates per your plan. Your plan is the Inpulse Basic and your text message rates are $0.20 per text sent or received and $0.25 per picture message sent or received.

While traveling outside the U.S., Canada, Dominican Republic, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico the text messaging rates are:

$0.50/address sent

$0.05/message received

*These text messages are not applied against any monthly text messaging allowance.

If you text some one with a U.S. number while both of you are in Canada; your text bundle will apply and no charges will occur. "

1. There is no charge to text to numbers in Canada.

2. There is also no charge for texting from within Canada to US/Canada numbers.

You only get charged .69/minute for calls made/received.

Thanks a million. I think when I was scanning for answers it was your post that gave me hope. I really didn't get from the website that the texting to Canada was free. But then again, this is all so new to me it's like learning a foreign language. Again, my profound thanks.

You're missing a key point in that information you just posted.

"Text messages sent to phone numbers in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico are charged domestic rates per your plan"

If you're paying for any type of texting plan then it will deduct from that allowance. You will not be charged .25/send and .20/receive a message from a Canada, Mexico or Puerto Rico number.

The website also confirms this information here, under the "rates" section.

So again, texting to Canadian numbers is just like texting to US numbers, no additional charge. It's only deducted from any type of package you have unless you're paying for unlimited.

The $20 bundle is unlimited VZW-VZW only with 5,000 out of network messages. So the rep was technically right in saying that it's unlimited for US only because only US numbers could be Verizon numbers. Texting to Canadian numbers would deduct from your 5,000 message allowance.
