for months the car charger has charged this phone fine, after upgrading to 4.3 it has stopped.
Anyone else?
One of my third party chargers doesn't work anymore. A second third party charger does, but that same one won't charge a Nexus 7 (2013) tablet while the tablet is powered on. I haven't tried my third party car charger yet.
Hey there Nitsuj,Lets keep your phone energized. Have you been using the same car charger the whole time? Where did you purchase this car charger from? Does it charge ok when you plug it into the wall? Please provide additional details so I can better assist.NicholasB_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
I had a chance to try my car charger last night and it charges the phone without turning off the device.
I have two different car chargers, one is a motorola the other a best buy redline or whatever their house brand is.
Before the 4.3 update both would charge my phone just fine, and had for months.
After the 4.3 update, when I plug it in it doesn't indicate it's charging at all for either of these vehicle chargers.
I know they can charge the phone as before the update I would get down to 40% or so, plug it in, drive for an hour and be at 80% or so.
Phone charges fine when plugged into a PC or the wall.
Nitsuj,Thanks for the clarification. Outside brand charges are usually not recommended for devices. When you plugged it in did you get a message on the phone to use branded charger? If the chargers worked prior to the update there is nothing in the update to not allow them to work again. Have you tried charging a different phone with the chargers? You may also want to clean the charging port on both the phone and chargers. Follow those steps and let us know if you see any improvement.Thank you,TonyG_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
I am having the same issue, but mine is the Verizon branded car charger. If I grab my samsung cable and plug it into the vacant usb port, then the phone charges fine, but the attached charging cable is not recognized unless I reboot my phone, and then it is only hit and miss. Problems arose after the update. A search online is showing that this is a common problem with this update.
Some more data points.
If I restart my phone it will work with the car charger until it reaches full charge. Then it stops working with the car charger until I restart it again. So if I get to 100% using the car charger, use the phone for a while and get down to 90%, I have to restart the phone before it works with either car charger again.
I have the same problem with the verizon branded car charger I have as well
All three car chargers work just fine with my wife's intensity 2
Same issue here.
Same issue with Samsung GS4 and using my Motorola car charger. It worked fine before the update, now it doesn't.
Same issue here. I'm using the charger I bought from Verizon with the phone. It will only charge in the car if I reboot the phone while it is connected to the charger.
Same issue here as well. All of my chargers worked fine prior to update...only way it works now is that i have it plugged in then restart my phone then and only then will it charge...if i take out the charger and try to plug it back in, it will not recognize it ... i then restart it and it charges again....very frustrating!!!!!
Like the others, we (2 phones + 2 verizon car chargers) also have this problem.
I too have had the same issue since software upgrade and I use the Verizon charger that was sold to me with the phone and have never had a problem before. I know you guys (support) have to ask certain questions and follow certain protocols but it is a little insulting that the company isn't owning up to this obvious software upgrade issue. We appreciate your assistance but please... just fix the software issue or revert back to the previous one.
Thank you for your time.
I have the same issue here.
Verizon support blamed Samsung. For laughs I went into Samsung online support. They were clueless and just kept using a canned response about using Samsung brand chargers for the phone and that they do not support chargers of another brand. YAWNNNNN
It's micro-usb. Why on earth is it so difficult for them to play nice...I thought only Apple was a monopolistic greedy pig with their proprietary connections???
I don't know too much about the technology but it seems silly to go out of your way to block certain chargers.
Oddly, my charger from my Thunderbolt charges it as I sit here at work, so clearly its not samsung ONLY chargers.
I really wish I could buy the Nexus 5 and jump to Tmobile. Fed up with Verizon and this software lockdown nonsense. Only major carrier to not allow nexus products so they can control the software testing and bloatware. Great job again!! They are lucky their coverage is unmatched!
Ok my Question to the Thread has Any one purchased a Samsung Branded OEM Car charger the model that is recommended for this particular phone) Car chargers, home chargers to the Naked eye for the most of it look all the same but when you start looking at the fine print on them you will see some difference on Voltages and how they charge, this phone with this new update may take a certain charger with certain Voltage characteristic from what it did. That is if Samsung change in how the phone takes the Voltages now.. Just saying
I have discovered that if you take the USB cable out of the AC adapter & plug that into the USB port on the car charger it will work.
Did some Searching on the OEM SamSung Car chargers and Found this: At Samsung.com Follow the Link for the Info on this charger.. And the phone Number if one is needed for Purchase
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/ECA-U20CBEGSTA
The reviews for this charger indicate that this charger does not have enough power to charge while using the device
Why would anyone want to spend $25 on the same technology we already have? And someone at Verizon or Samsung decided it would be a novel idea to remove functionality for 3rd party chargers. I'd like to get to the bottom of this, because it totally seems like a Verizon thing to do, not Samsung. Yet Verizon is blaming Samsung for it.
Looks like Sprint is the only other carrier to get the 4.3 update so far, but no claims of this issue on that forum on AndroidCentral.
Good afternoon wpin,Let's get this issue resolved! My son has this device and he encountered the same issue, which we resolved by doing a http://vz.to/1b59FYH factory reset. Please do it and test.AntonioC_VZWFollow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/VZWSupport
Factory reset needs to be a last resort, not a first resort. It takes a lot of time and energy to backup all the data and settings and then restore them
AntonioC_VZW are using the Charger I described above or One provided from Verizon on your son's phone?
TopJCat, this is an unfortunate coincidence. Let's take a closer look into this. Have you downloaded 3rd party applications to your device from the Google Play market to your device? Some application software can affect the performance of your device after the 4.3 update is pushed to your phone. I recommend that you uninstall a few applications, power it off/on, and charge the device again. Lasina_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
I am also dealing with this problem, and so is my husband. My phone is also going to a black screen and locks me out for some time. I have noticed that my phone also feels hotter now after the upgrade.
So are you stating that the official Verizon Wireless car charger is no longer a usable option with this phone? Will VZW be providing refunds for accessories purchased!?
So we knew the official VZW charger doesn't work.
I purchased a new charger that just arrived (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EJ4CE84/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and it exhibits the same behavior as the VZW charger. It beeps like it's going to charge, but doesn't.
This is beyond horrible VZW/Samsung.
Yeah I have a Motorola one thats charged my last three phones, including this one before the update. Nada.
I need to remember to bring my usb cord into the card, since I have a usb port in the center console. Maybe that will work/suffice for car charging.
Well, I just did a master reset and it's still not charging ... AWESOME!
Hello rossw56, Having your phone receive a charge is definitely important! I'm certainly regretful for all of the frustrations this has caused. As we've recommended so far, please try a Hard Reset for your device: http://vz.to/15Bpzd9 and retest. If this doesn't work, it has been recommend to use the original charger that came with your device or any Samsung specific chargers at this time. Please keep me posted if you have any other questions.Thanks!MelissaM_VZWPlease follow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
I can confirm that this works too. The verizon wireless charger is useless unless you plug in your samsung cable into the available usb port.
LisaRH, we don't want to insult you in any way. I apologize that once your upload the update to your device, you will be unable to revert it or remove it.Software updates are pushed to your device to give you the best wireless experience. It provides patches, which fixed software incompatible bugs and improved software performance to make your device more secure and it reduces conflict. However, it can conflict with 3rd party applications which will cause various issues. This is why it's recommended that you uninstall a few applications or master reset your device in Settings. Keep us posted.LasinaH_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
I am having this same issue directly after a firmware update, I was using the verizon branded car charger, after the update I did a week before this post (it might have released earlier but I just did it a week ago) my phone stopped charging while in the car, but it works on my 3rd party charger still, and it charges at home np, I also found that if I plug a usb cord into my verizon's usb port, it charges my phone. I took the charger back because I had just gotten it recently, and the replacement does the exact same thing.
Hey there mwadford911,I'm sorry for the issues that you are having with your S4 after the update. The software update should improve the performance of the update and not hinder it. Lets get you back up and running. I have an S4 myself and I have had similar issues, but a master reset resolved them all. Please perform a hard reset,http://vz.to/176v3fz, and keep us updated with results.NicholasB_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
Im having same issue, what is Verizon going to do about this????!!!! I bought new Verizon Car Charger from them for NOT cheap either and now they tell me its not going to work anymore because of a update.. are you freakin serious
I'm sure they will happily sell you a s4 specific charger for $50
Look for a Good priced charger on either Amazon, Droid Life or Try Android Central / Crackberry.com b33

Mind posting pictures of your phone charging with a charger connected? I'm curious because I have done a master reset as well and it did not resolve the problem.
What is the mA rating for your chargers? Have you gotten any other chargers to work? Tried a co-workers, another family member's charger?
Is this planning to ever be fixed? I can't charge my phone at all in my car anymore.
What i think we should do is ask for a service credit for how ever long it takes them to patch the software. Why pay them for a device that doesnt function the way it should.
When will there be a fix for this? The blog out there are already calling for immediate action from Verizon..this is going viral. I know the company I work for is seeking legal action. what is the response from Verizon? Oh BTW. a hard reset is not an option..unless Verizon is willing to pay millions in compensation for wasting users valuable time.
Are they saying that the car chargers from the Verizon store won't work?
Just got the new software update, should fix this issue!!
This issue needs fixed. I don't need to reset my phone I need Verizon/samsung not to screw us over.
Hi ikepete,Just to clarify, doing a software update shouldn't erase/reset your phone to factory settings. It's to help fix any problems like the one you mentioned. We still recommend backing up your information like contacts, pictures, etc somewhere else to be on the safe side, regardless of whether you do a software update.ElizabethE_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupport

Have you installed the latest system update released in the last few weeks? It was supposed to fix the charging cable issues.
I took the OTA update to 4.3 in late December. My car chargers stopped working, Waze voice controls were hosed and battery consumption is terrible. Non-Samsung USB cables no longer work. (Note that USB is an industry standard, so someone has done something to break the standard. That is not OK.)
JDM2650, We do want to make sure your device is working as it should and chargers are a huge part to that. If you are having issues after the software, the way to fix any issues would be to do a master reset to make sure all features were updated to the right software correctly. I just got my S4 and am also having the same issue. Is anyone from Verizon looking into this? Also I cannot play Pandora though the USB, either in my 2011 Hyundai or 2012 Subaru. Anyone else?
It's been an ongoing issue since the 4th quarter of 2013 when the S4 came out that's why frankly I've stayed away from Samsung products for the issues they with them the company never seems to fix them.. My new phone is a Droid Maxx it's beast it may not have the best screen but it does have a better battery and just better reliability throughout.. b33
