Why am I not able to use the built in fm tuner in my HTC One on Verizon? I do not want to stream fm, I want to use the tuner.

I am angry about as well. I don't understand Verizon. It's like the last thing they think about is the customer.
They Dropped them from the phone over a Year ago in Lu of the many Music Choices out on the PlayStore >> Slacker , Pandora , XM Radio , iHeart Radio , Tune in Radio , Shazam , Google Play Music , And one of my Favorites Winamp and it ShoutCast Radio.. b33
...how the heck are those things a substitute for FM radio? I like it because I can listen to football games on my bike.
If we can't get an official response for why this phone is lacking software support for a built-in hardware feature, shouldn't we consider it a defective product? And when can we expect this defect to be addressed via software update?
That doesn't make it a defective device, it just has an unsupported hardware component. Just like the Nexus 4 and LTE.
Are you saying that the Nexus 4 has an LTE radio that Verizon doesn't support? My understanding is that it doesn't have an LTE radio at all, but that's rather the opposite situation. There is no incompatibility here. Just missing software.
I buy a smartphone with a camera on the back and no camera app because it's "unsupported", shouldn't I feel ripped off?
Moreover, how do you know that this is an "unsupported hardware component" and not a mistake? Can you point me to an official statement from Verizon to back that up? So far they seem to be silent on the issue. Hey, for all I know they're working round-the-clock on a fix.
The specification sheet listed on the HTC web site does not call out any FM tuner for the One.
Because Verizon isn't currently supporting it.
Dear brewhoppy,Good morning. I understand the importance of being able to use all features that come with your phone. Unfortunately, we do not have any information regarding a sofware update that will enable the use of the FM turner on this device. Verizon--are you confirming that it was not disabled in hardware, just software?
scarshapedstar--how do you know it works in airplane mode?
Again, it's infuriating that verizon made us wait months longer for this phone, then disabled a very nice feature.
I don't know if some marketing genius thought it would increase data revenues, but I have to point out that the times I use the FM radio on my DINC2 are times that there's no data connection anyway, or something I can't stream.
The sprint network has issues, but they have a very cool use of the FM radio feature (but sadly exclusive).
http://gigaom.com/2013/08/15/interactive-fm-radio-app-nextradio-coming-to-sprint-via-exclusive-red-htc-one/
From this article "On the plus side, since audio is received over the phone’s FM tuner rather than the internet, you use three times less battery power and only 10 percent of the data used by streaming radio. "

UGH. Maybe I should cancel and switch to ATT.
I would like to echo others on this thread and say how disappointed I am that my new HTC One from Verizon does not have the FM Radio feature! This was a selling point for me over the GS4 and iPhone, and it never occurred to me that Verizon wouldn't have the radio feature given that all the other carries have it. I sincerely hope this is just a software update you are working to resolve. I rely on FM radio to listen to local live sports broadcasts in my area.
I use the Tune In https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tunein.player&hl=en app that was pre installed ..listing to my crystal clear local WCBS 101.1 right now..among 25+ other sports/rock/talk/news.. stations.. via my WiFi. Many I CANT get with my High Zoot radio in the Malibu..too!
Boom speakers are some ----. via My Beats head phones from my REZOUND are addicting.
FM tuner..R I P ..
Until KitKat 4.4 !
Wowie zowie, I had that app installed for 3 years on my old Dinc, but never knew what it was for. Actually, I did, because I can read, but never used it because - as has been beaten to death repeatedly - you can't stream sports with it.
Anyway, the FM tuner isn't dead, it's just kidnapped for some inexplicable reason.
I love how Verizon felt the need to "help us conserve data" by nagging us with a Wifi notification that comes on if you turn WiFi off and comes on if you have WiFi on to notify you of "open" networks, typically ones that are behind a login page and thus aren't even open, so it's totally useless and hardly ever goes away - might as well just stencil it over the screen for all the good it does. In fact it's so useless and omnipresent I'm surprised it doesn't have a big red V on it. And yet when it comes to things that actually conserve data, like listening to local radio stations with the phone's built-in antenna, they're like... (comments discussing moderation removed)
Sure am glad I kept my grandfathered unlimited data, because wasting their bandwidth doesn't cost me a cent - fitting, given that they're forcing me to do it.

Correction... you can listen to many sports-talk radio stations online with apps like Tune In. But when it comes to actually listening to a live sporting event broadcast (such as the nightly Red Sox game) the only way to listen online is through a paid subscription through MLB or NHL or NBA etc. This is due to licencing agreements. And since these broadcasts are still available for free through traditional FM radio airwaves, I'm not willing to pay MLB just to be able to listen to the games on my phone. I'll hang onto my FM receiver for that. It is just unfortunate that my new phone doesn't come with a pre-installed FM tuner the way my old Droid did.
Verizon, please fix this and make the HTC One just as good on your network as the AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile variants!
Verizon,
Please hit us with a software update that allows us to use the FM tuner for the HTC one. I love the phone but if i am not able to use all of its hardware I am strongly considering switching my $250/month family plan to one of your competitors.
PLEASE FIX!!!!
Until I see proof that FM radio doesn't cause cancer, we can only describe this as an innovative VZW improvement
Dear Denmc,Good morning. Software updates are exciting! At this time we do not have any information regarding a software release for this device. However, please feel free to register for alerts on new products and services by clicking http://bit.ly/dDumph Please know that we do not want to lose you! What other features besides the fm tuner are you unable to use on the HTC One?Thank You,MichelleS_VZWVZW SupportFollow us on Twitter @VZWSUPPORT
Thnx TJHAW; those are ineteresting facts about Sprint's customer friendly approach of taking advantage of a very useful feature rather than neglecting it...get a clue Verizon!
Honestly this is ridiculous that this is not supported. Considering I had to give up my unlimited data to upgrade, the FM tuner was a major decision factor in purchasing this phone.
If this feature is not supported I will take my business elsewhere.
Honestly, because it doesn't have FM radio your leaving? We buy a "Phone" to make and receive calls.
The problem is everyone wants more. its a computer, its a radio, its a GPS, it a video game, a TV remote etc.
if you researched prior to buying you would have found Verizon disabled the FM tuner. As B33 said there are many other choices for radio. Yes the HTC One I own has it, but I very rarely use it.
Then we have people threaten to leave because Verizon doesn't push out OS updates, and when they do the same people are back here complaining their phones are not working and again Verizon takes a hit. You cannot please everyone.
As long as you can make and receive calls sit back and be grateful. The other stuff is all fluff.
Good Luck
I really don't get why they (Verizon) chose to disable both the FM tuner and the Battery Saving feature.
What did they gain by taking features away?
Are they going to mess around with the One Max also (I have to assume so).
You have to remember Verizon is famous for messing with features on devices used on their network.
Could be a hardware issue with their services, or just disabling to charge for simular services that everyone else receives for free. it is anyones guess.
Morning Elector: I might have a solution to this issue being discussed, I'd sell my Droid X it has a FM tuner in it, it has no 4G so it might be a tad slower on the side but it's in excellent shape) better than many I've see out there, I'd sell it for smack dab of a price..
By your logic if you buy a Ferrari you should be just happy that it drives. It doesn't matter that it was tuned to be a sports car, since VZW limited the governor and and it only hits 60 mph.
The HTC One is a top of the line phone and I should receive all of the features that comes with it. I did my research on the phone and found it had a FM tuner - no where in the Verizon store did they mention they disabled it.
Also other radios use data and significantly more battery than a FM tuner.
I don't need to be grateful that my device is limited by the carrier.
At the HTC USA site and many other sites, droid life and android central covered the carriers and evidently you did not research it enough.
And please no car analogy since that is apples to "nothing"
If you buy a ford festivea you would say that is no match for a sports car. Some cars come with ashtrays and some do not. So you are saying because you don't have an ash tray, you won't buy it.
I wonder if I bought the BLUE verizon htc one from best buy if the tuner would be available. I would like the option as well!
Hi BOB D,
Got a question for you -- wondering if you could help me out with something. Do you have any problems streaming WCBS-FM on your TuneIn radio app when connected on Verizon's mobile network (not WiFi) with your HTC One?
For some reason on my end, certain the audio on stations (like WCBS-FM WCBS 880 News) stop playing after several seconds when my phone screen is off. The audio gets interrupted and then has to buffer before replaying, usually after I turn the screen back on. The problem doesn't happen when I'm connected via WiFi or when my phone is synced to a Bluetooth device. t's very strange.
Do you think you could test this out on your end and let me know if you have any of the same issues.
Thanks,
SW
