Samsung Galaxy S4 update

Very early this morning, 4/27/2014 @ 1:18am I docked my Samsung Galaxy S4 to my PC and recieved notice that a software update was available, so, went into my settings to start the update, once the update was finished I checked new version showing as; update_SCH-I545_MK2_to_NC5(is this the new KitKat update?). Before this update it wouldn't connect to 4GLTE, after update my 4G is now working, BUT, now when I dock my phone to my PC I get a notice that "Your device's current firmware version is not supported to update firmware.", is this something I should be concerned about, did they screw my phone up with this update.

Thank you, now I need to find out info on the rest of my question, because, as it is according to message my phone is no longer updateable.

Just tried to address this by running the Software Upgrade Assistant and still no go, this is what I get when I run it;

So, what is going on Verizon?

Yikes! Let's make sure we don't have anything to worry about! Was the update to NC5 completed? If so, and the phone is functioning fine otherwise, you should be good to go. Additional support was added to prevent software rollback and NC5 is the most up to date software version released by the manufacturer.

If the software has not updated successfully, we need to get the device to respond. Disconnect from the USB. Simultaneously press and hold the Power button Volume up key Home key. Release the Power button when the Phone vibrates. Continue to hold the Volume Home key until the Android logo appears. From the Android system recovery screen, select "Wipe Cache Partition." Utilize the Volume Up/Down keys to highlight and the Power button to select. Once completed, select "Reboot System Now." Once you are back at the home screen reconnect to the USB and attempt to update again.

I have been in a live chat session for the better part of the afternoon with customer support(session ID for the chat is: >>removed<<) with no luck in resolving my issues. While I was doing one of the last things advised to do(that being to run the "Software Repair Assistant") I kept consistantly getting the following error message which is one of the issues I am getting since the KitKat update(Screenshot of error)

The phone keeps dropping its connection, so, now my phone is useless since all I get on my phone now is an onscreen message saying(Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.) and that message stays onscreen even if I remove the battery. My only resolve now is to schedule a date to be picked up and brought to the Verizon store since I am disabled and don't drive hoping they replace my phone it not even 30 days old yet. That new KitKat update has got to be the worst thing Verizon has ever done IMO.or

Well, my phone has started doing what I have been posting about in this thread(see all my replies as well as other topics by me, all concerning issues on this KitKat update). I am now contemplating forwarding all posts with all replies to the BBB, FTC, FCC and anyone else I can think of about this and bring phone back to store to get my money back and cut off all ties to verizon for the simple reason that verizon is doing NOTHING to address the myriad of problems being caused by the new KitKat update which is being caused, IMO, by the TON OF BLOATWARE that verizon adds to a working OS that doesn't give the other cellular providers the trouble verizon users are having. I am now beyond being consoled, so, verizon don't bother replying unless it's to inform us of a rollback(and don't say a rollback isn't possible because this is so untrue) or an update fix. I would advise everyone having problems to do the same because it's not your phone, it's the Verizon adulterated KitKat update that they refuse to take responsibility for. It's time for big business to stop taking advantage of the little guy.

My phone is running hot and using 100% CPU. The Battery tab shows that Android OS is running at 100% CPU. My phone time is about 4 hours (it's been 2 hours and 53% battery left) until the battery will be dead. Before the update it would easily last most of the day and only use 50% charge. I have to turn the phone off to let it cool and to get it to last a few more hours, in case I need to make a call. Obviously I can't receive any calls while it is turned off.

I would love to think that there is some setting somewhere that got borked and that I can change it without resetting my phone to factory defaults. Resetting the phone means reinstalling Google Authenticator, Kindle Reading App, and lots of other apps that I will have to re-authenticate. It's really a lot of work.

Usually when an iPhone update does this kind of thing it is something like notifications firing more often than they used to and it can be fixed by turning off notifications for a misbehaving app. Here, since the usage in the Android OS, I have no idea what to do except turn off the phone to keep it from burning up and also running the battery down to 0%, which Lithium Ion batteries do not like.

I look forward to hearing about a fix for this problem. It's not quite like bricking the phone, but it is close, since I have to turn it off.

By the way, I have been charging my phone with the official charger that shipped with the phone.

Also, sometimes when I restart the phone, it plays a very loud, outdated Amber alert.

Thanks for all the details DrStephenCW! I am sorry to learn of all the issues with your phone after the latest update! I was also experiencing similar issues after updating, and I resolve all post update issues with a factory reset. I really didn't want to reset my phone so I tried a lot of different things in terms of restarting, charging it while off, etc. Eventually I left it off for 2 hours, without charging, and when I turned it back on I did not get an old Amber alert and now the CPU for Android OS seems reasonable. It's the middle of my work day and I'm at 83% battery and my phone is not overheating. Good luck everyone - I don't know what actually fixed it. I just tried a lot of things. Come to think of it maybe it was turning it off rather than doing a restart that was the key thing. Who knows?
