Am I obligated to get a new device after one year on the device payment plan?

HI, since the CHAT feature hasn't worked for days now and the phone lines have long waits, I have this question:

I recently traded my 928 for the new ICON using the EDGE plan. After the one year, can I hand the phone back or am I obligated to take another phone and continue.

I would appreciate a fast answer since I can return the ICON and get my 928 back pending the answer I get here.
