Volume issue on new Droid X

I traded in my BlackBerry Storm for the Droid X. My Storm was having charging issues about two weeks prior to the Droid X release. Im going to take high-def video (with Droid X) of me running over the Storm with my car while turning the wheel back & forth a few times. :smileymad:

My ONLY complaint so far is the volume is not nearly loud enough.

For such a powerful multimedia device with a beautiful screen, it has a very WIMPY volume when at Max setting. I hope Motorola addresses this in a future firmware upgrade (or some druid hackers).

Has anyone else noticed lack of volume? I've seen one other person with Droid & their volume at Max setting was same as mine.

You are correct, the speaker phone and media volume are very low while on Max. The ringtone max volume is not that great either. With my past Motorola products a user created fix soon follows for this issue.

Same problem here. The speaker in the Droid X sux. My Moto Droid was way louder. Im missing calls and texts all the time on this droid x. In anyone sees a user fix or app for this, please update this forum thread.

I agree I switch from a blackberry to my brand new droid x. Everything about the droid is awesome except the lack of volume and pushed facebook notifications. hope a update can fix this

I agree that there is a volume problem with the Droid X, which I otherwise love except for this volume problem. The volume is low both on the earpiece and especially on the speaker phone.

I am very upset about the volume issue. The first time I needed to use my alarm, I slept right thorugh it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is the same problem i found myself having with my itouch ipod too. So you know the Droid is some what of a 'Copy cat' of Apple phone products. They may improve that with the Droid 2...never know????

The speaker in my wifes little lg is even smaller but much louder. A simple system update that codes the phone to send more power to the speakers when the volume is turned way up would do the trick (credited dsxdroider & I agree).

I've just switched to the DROID X from the BB Tour... wow am i disappointed in the speaker capabilities!! Pandora is almost unusable with this 'multimedia phone'. Quite a disappointment.

i was comparing the designed of droid 1 to droid x and in droid 1 the speakers is pushed back and longer so sound could travel better as in the X itz flat

ALL OF US MUST CONTACT VERIZON FROM A PHONE OTHER THAN THE DROID X TO ESCALATE THIS SITUATION TO RESOLUTION. ALSO POST AT MOTOROLA.COM.

I can barely hear the Droid X ring when a call comes in or the alert if a text or email is received. I have to check my phone regularly to see if I missed a call/text/email. PLEASE CONTACT VERIZON, from a phone other than the Droid X, AND LET THEM KNOW OF YOUR EXPERIENCES IF YOU TOO ARE HAVING THESE CONCERNS.

I worked with Verizon and Motorola and after verifying the phone was set correctly I convinced the Motorola representative to put a Motorola Droid, with the slide out Keyboard, next to a Droid X and compare the difference in volume for the incoming calls and alerts. They agreed there is a difference.

Please communicate your concern at Motorola.com also. Do not leave the phone face up as you will barely hear anything…I sometimes do not hear the phone when it’s quiet while I am sleeping.

I totally agree with MRHH56. What he/she typed is so true. (Just read my recent posts on the matter to see how strongly I agree with MRHH56 and how true MRHH56's posts really seem to be.)

So please follow his/her lead/instructions! If you want a bit more detail on how to do so, please read the post of mine at the link below, follow the simple instructions described in that post, and add a reply to that post describing your volume/speaker problem. Posting messages on this forum is not going to get Verizon to do anything. Their first line tech support people need to receive calls documenting the problem. The more calls and documented problems, the more seriously and quickly more upper level tech support people will look into the matter and work on a solution.

Here is that post of mine. Please consider following the simple instructions, and also adding a reply to the post describing your experience of the problem, and even better, your experience with calling in the problem to Verizon (and perhaps also to Motorola as MRHH56 wisely suggests.

I swapped out my 1st droid x for another reason.. The volume was way louder on the 1 I brought back so I don't think this is across the board.

I received the update and after a soft reset have noticed a significant change in my volume issue.

Seems there to two issue hear, I have identified something about this issue that makes me believe its a design flaw also causing the issues in volume levels, It appears that since the device is made to be so thin the speaker is actually pressed against the back case cover to the point that the sound is simply exiting the case which accustically isnt a good design because the volume is being dispersed into a large area which muffles down the sound a bit, if you cover the speaker with hand in a cup fasion you will notice the volume carries a lot more.

I also looked at other devices I have around and I notice that all of them appear to have a gap between the speaker and cover that appears to allow the sound to carry more. I placed a plate over the back of phone when I placed it into the dock and noticed that I can use speaker phone now and do not have issue hearing person on line through speaker.

I do realize this isnt a fix but I just thought I would point this out..

Here is dumb thing I learned about this phone and its ringer, I just founr dout that if you are listing to music or a video and you turn volume down to avoid it being to load, the master volume is lowered, so when you close the application the master volume stays at the low volume setting... Not that is a dumb setting.

Update...Figured out the this option is under Settings/Sound And Display/Ringer Volume..... "Use Incoming Call Volume for Notification" need to be unchecked... This is on as default....

I just called Verizon Techical suppport, the Rep was not very helpful. He told me there was NO KNOWN ISSUE with this problem.

I reported it. I told him I put the Droid X and the original Motorold DROID side by side and did a sound comparison. The original droid is 2 to 3 times louder than the X.

I hope this gets fixed soon............I had always used my phone as an alarm...well, I can't do that anymore, I SLEEP THROUGH IT ! ! ! ! !

It is clear how they plan on handling this issue... Every tech reports the same thing everytime someone calls about this subject.. This is getting **bleep**. There is one thing to not fix issue but continue to lie about issue even getting reported. These companies arte amazing, I think its time to consider a house phone again..

Good job on the video. I gave it a 5 star rating. Im going to call Verizon tomorrow & request a new phone be shipped to my house. If it is a batch issue (as someone in an earlier post suggested), then the new phone should be louder. If the new phone isn't louder, i'll keep the current phone as i have already put the invisible sheild on & spent many hours with customizations. Either way I will post my results. Thank you all for your efforts. Remember, keep calling Verizon & hounding them (as I will be doing again tomorrow), until we get this issue resolved.

The weird thing is that my device seems to switch from both phones levels, sometime its so load I have to turn it way down and sometimes even all the way up I cant hear it..

What I hate is that the alarm clock volume is horrible.

I have to wake up early in the morning for work and I almost have to try and condition myself to wake up around the time I'm suppose to, because I'm scared that the alarm clock won't wake me up because it isn't loud enough.

I have the same problem with the volume. it is very hard to hear, even with a higher pitched ringtone. I cannot have the ringtone I want on my phone because I simply cannot hear it. I came to the DX from the Devour, and that had a nice loud speaker and I could play any ringtone I wanted. This is a major con to the DX and I sure hope they fix it and send us a way to update our phones before too long, missing calls and text messages sucks.

i switch from the moto droid to the droid x it is an awesome phone except for the speaker phone i cant hear it ring. i have missed so many calls and texts it is ridiculous. i called verizon and talked them about it, they told me that it is not a known issue which means that no one is calling in and reporting it. they are sending me a new x because my current x keeps rebooting itself hopefully the new x has a better speaker phone if not i hope verizon and motorola fix this issue. EVERYONE WHO IS HAVING THIS PROBLEM PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!!! call in and report this issue.

A Federal law passed on Monday makes the Droid X Efuse illegal. The new law is detailed in this article from Yahoo News and can only bring litigation on Verizon and Motorola.I wonder what Verizon and Motorola plan to do to have these Efuses removed from the Droid X. My Droid hasen't shipped yet, hopefully they fix the problem before they ship mine.

The low speaker volume is my only complaint with my X really. Any other minor gripes I have I am sure can and will be fixed in an update. For example no emoticons and just showing the symbols instead. Not that big a deal and can even be fixed by downloading an app. A lot of the other complaints I read about all seam like they can easily be fixed with an update or by an app. Now whether moto actually does fix things through an update is a different story. My X charges very fast when plugged into a wall outlet but with my car charger it takes an hour just to go up 10-15% but I thought it was the 3rd party charger I was using.

Being such a new phone and this new interface that isn't supposed to be motoblur I don't see some bugs as that huge an issue. I really feel(and hope) that when Froyo is release and with an update or 2 the X really could be the best Android phone out there for awhile. Really sad they left out a front facing camera it really the only feature missing(but not that big a deal to me anyway).

Funny thing about the speaker is that it doesn't sound stressed at all. The last 3 notches in the volume doesn't continue to turn up the volume. It is a little low on speakerphone calls but sometimes ridiculously loud on some games and apps. This all would tell me it is a software limitation and not a hardware one. Let's just hope that it can and will be fixed in an update.

The latest word from Motorola suggests that the 2.2 update will not fix the volume problem. Apparently, Motorola has a few people working on a separate fix for the volume problem, but if they do decide to fix it through a firmware update, it will not be in 2.2. Mortorola is focusing on fixing several other bugs for 2.2 and has the majority of their programmers and electrical engineers working on fixes for these other bugs (such as Exchange problems, Gmail syncing, etc.). Apparently, not enough people have called Motorola and Verizon to get the volume problem documented for it to be a priority. That is one of the reasons, along with a few others, that I repeatedly posted links to websites and forums from around the internet (such as the Google Code Android website, Droidforums, Motorola owners forum, Droidx forums, Mydroid forums, etc.) that contain updated reports and documentation of this problem and that similarly urge all X users who experience the problem to call Verizon and Motorola tech support, follow their instructions to try to fix the problem, and then report to them whether the problem persists on your Droid X unit (after following their instructions) and how bad it is; you need to call them on a separate line so that you can follow their instructions while talking on the phone with them. For instructions and updated links, try to find my previous posts/replies on this forum as well as similar ones on others.

I would like to reprint here links that provide instructions on how to call Verizon and Motorola tech support, what to say, and also updated links that contain new X users reporting everyday their experience of the severity of the same and similar problems. However, I also want to comply with the Verizon Wireless Community Forums Terms of Service, and I do not want to make repetitive posts, or to "bomb" the forum with several posts/replies that contain information and links about the same problem (even if the info at those links is updated). Anyone who is interested can find those websites on their own, look through their postings, search through their forums, etc.

Hope you are all enjoying your Droid X units, which really are wonderful even though some/many of them have this volume speaker problem.

I have called 611..also left numerous posts here and there especially at the motorola forum....if u call moto...or verizon they say that haven't heard of this issue... .well when i spoke to verizon rep i was told that its important to call this in that the more concerns that are made over this the more thy will be aware and likely to try to fix this problem.............now this is my first post in this forum and im curios is this actually monitored by verizon and if so are u aware of this and is it being looked at seriously

I have already answered bear0013's questions in previous posts and replies on this forum and at droidforums. Unfortunately, the Verizon Community Forums Terms of Service forbid me (and everyone else) from repeating information in posts/replies. Even if the repetitive information is answering new questions, and even if seemingly repetitive posts/replies actually contain links with updated and relevant new info, repetitive posting violates the Verizon Community Forum Terms of Service and risks the consequence of being banned from ever posting or replying to anything on the Verizon forums ever again (seriously, no joke). In addition, I cannot explain how I know this or give any evidence for this because doing so would also violate the Verizon Community Forums Terms of Service. All I can say is that forum users should carefully read (and comply) with the Terms of Service.

So, anyone interested in the Droid X low volume speaker problem should please find all related posts on this forum and at droidforums (many by me, many by others, etc.). The posts/replies explain what needs to happen in order for Verizon to get Motorola to work on a system update that will improve the volume problem (by increasing the power sent to the speaker when the volume is turned up without damaging the phone, compromising the battery - and other parts of the phone that need the battery - too much, etc.).

Anyone interested should know that the past repetitive posts/replies (by myself and/or others) have produced some good effect. Enough people did call Verizon tech support on a separate line, follow their instructions on trying to fix your Droid X unit, and report whether the volume problem persists. The Droid X low volume speaker problem is now officially recognized by Verizon customer service and Verizon tech support. If you call them and ask them to check for any known issues, amongst their many resources is now a short statement (that they can read to you verbatim upon request) about how Verizon is aware of this problem and may try to fix it in a future update.

I will here try to post informative instructions that answer bear0013's questions without violating the Terms of Service, though answering her questions here by me may actually result in me never being able to post or reply to anything on this forum ever again (seriously, no joke - and I cannot tell you or explain to you why I say this without further risking being banned from ever being able to post/reply anything here ever again - seriously, no joke).

Tech support people do not read these forums as evidence of anything. (This does actually make sense. Verizon tech support requires you to call in and verify your Verizon mobile number along with the last 4 digits of your social security number. This verifies you as an actual customer with an actual Verizon phone/service. Unless you do this, for all anyone knows (I think), anyone posting on this forum could be an iphone user who has never used any Verizon products or services (please correct me if I am mistaken)). So, Verizon customers need to call Verizon tech support and follow their instructions in order for them to document anything. In addition, you should call Verizon tech support instead of Motorola tech support. Even though Motorola actually does everything regarding fixes, updates, etc., they will only do so if Verizon asks them to do so. And Verizon will only ask them to do so if enough people call in, go through the process of checking everything that might be wrong with the phone, and documenting a problem report if the problem persists despite everything tried while on the phone with tech suppport.

The reason Verizon is not rushing to fix the volume problem in the way that they rushed to fix the other problems with the first system update is that not enough people have documented the problem as instructed in my previous posts/replies. Verizon understandably needs to triage their resources and prioritize their resources directed towards fixing particular problems in accordance with such things as how many people have properly documented the problem through tech support.

Will the enhancement enable the vibrate to kick up a notch as well? I only use vibrate and thank goodness for the little green light blinking! Otherwise I would know I had messages or calls!

The original Droid has great volume for ringtone and notification. I really love the X, I recommend it to everyone. Had I known about the volume issues prior to my purchase of the X last week, maybe I would have tried the Droid 2 first. Let's get it right Motorola.
