How do I backup all data?

I never see any evidence my S4 is backing up or has backed up all data, automatically. When I connect S4 to computer (via USB), I don't get any software launching such as a console, where I could perform operations such as a backup of data. (Yes, I have installed the VW software utility on the computer.) If S4 is backing up by itself automatically (e.g. to cloud), how do I see those settings & control that?

I completely understand how important it is to make sure that your device's important data is being backed up regularly. On Android Smartphones, your contacts are backed up once daily automatically by Cloud. Photos, videos, music, and documents are backed up every 4 hours, automatically by Cloud at a max of 50 MB per sync. Call logs and text messages are backed up every 4 hours auomatically by cloud.
