I'm trying family base during the 3 month free period and it appears that you cannot apply time restrictions to individual functions, i.e. texting, calling, downloading data. They can either all be on or off which makes no sense. I want my children to be able to make calls for the most part all of the time, but I want to restrict texting and data usage during school hours and after they go to bed. Am I understanding family base correctly? Does anyone know of an application that can do what I described above? We have 2 droids and 2 iphones in the family.

I will not be continuing with the $5 family base once the 3 month trial is up because of the limitations within the program. Verizon, if you can count email messages, phone calls, and data usage, it seems like I could choose which one I want to apply time restrictions to.

I hear you! Family Base is a great feature. Yes, time restrictions does apply to all services. Although, you can create a trusted contacts list for your children to call during school hours.
