The update says it's supposed to improve battery life. This is not the case my battery has drained very quickly since update and it's still a fairly new battery (about 2 months old).
I completely agree with you, Brian78wa! The update is supposed to enhance the features of the device and not the opposite. How long does the battery last for typically from full charge to low battery? Are you using a task killer at all? Have you tried to close down unused applications? I changed runtime from Dalvik to ART and my Droid Razr Maxx HD now seems to have much improved responsiveness and battery time under Android 4.4.2 (KitKat.) Here's an article about Dalvik (the old runtime) and ART (the new one) and how to enable it on some phones. Worked like a charm on mine.
How To: Change Android Runtime From Dalvik To ART On Your Kitkat Smartphone | TechTree.com
Note: I had to tap the build number 7 times, TWICE in succession, in order to gain developer privileges.
After chosing ART as the runtime, my phone then recompiled all my apps (took awhile so make sure the battery has a pretty good charge), rebooted, and everything worked perfectly. My main beef about KitKat now is that it doesn't allow backing up apps to my external micro SD card. Why, I don't know, but the card is basically useless now.
Before the update I could get through the day without having to put it on the charger. I used it about 2 hours total throughout the day. Now I have to put it on the charger halfway through the day with only using it for about 30 min total within that time period. The rest is all standby time.
I don't use a task killer app but I do use the built in task killer when you keep the home button pressed. I use this often to try to save as much battery as possible now. Before I didn't have to use it near as much.
perola thanks for trying, unfortunately this option is not available on the s3.
Try "DU Battery Saver," free on Google Play, and see if that helps.

i also got the kit kat upgrade saturday. had this phone year and a half and never had to charge during the day. since the upgrade have to charge the phone every 4 hours. dont see anything in data usage abnormal, but in battery screen is taking 42% of battery usage with 9 minutes of use???? my 42" big screen takes less electricity than that. how do i back the upadate out.
Hi mdg5!I'm sorry to learn of any battery issues with your device after the update! Let's see what we can do OK? Do you have power saver mode on? Is the screen set to automatic, or do you have the brightness turned all the way up? (was it set the same before and after the update)Many times, customers find that a reset of the device resolves issues. Please give this a try: http://vz.to/1eh9PUT Keep me posted on the results!ChristinaB_VZWVZW SupportFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupport

I do not have power saver mode on but I did not have it on before the update. Screen is not on auto because the auto is horrible, makes screen too dim, but I did not have it on auto before the update. My screen brightness is hmm or all the up it is about 3/4 up but it was like this before the update. Everything is the same settings now as it was before update but the battery life is still worse now. I even trying doing factory reset to no avail. I also tried what msg5 said he did also did not work.
mdg5, Oh good! I'm glad to hear that we got some life back into the battery. If you ever need us feel free to reach out to us at anytime. KevinR_VZWPlease follow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
Brian78wa lets get you charged up! Are you using the manufacturer's charger? Has there been any other changes besides the update to the device, such as any new apps, since this issue began?AshleyS_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
I'll probably get flamed badly, but my S3 hasn't had any problem since the upgrade. While there are a lot of complaints on the forums, with millions of S3 out there, I'm guessing that less than 1% are experiencing a problem. Unfortunately, that doesn't help you or give you a fuzzy feeling. Sorry; I really hope Verizon can figure this out and offer a fix.
I wonder if it is a particular run or batch of phones that may be slightly different that are having issues. Was there more than one factory turning out the S3? More than one line? Maybe using a different board/chip/firmware?
pzjagd1 I guarantee more than 1% are having the issue. Just because people don't call or write to Verizon doesn't mean they don't have the problem.
As for the issue itself it's still not resolved. Yesterday I barely even used my phone and it was down to 30% battery by 12pm and it was taken off the charger at 8am 79% battery loss in only 4 hours is not a good thing.
