Data Connection Problems and 4.4.2 update

After installing the new update, my 4G connection stops working. It will sometimes work, other times only 3G, and other times no data connection at all. Verizons only suggestion right now is to keep restarting the phone, which only helps for about 10 minutes until it drops data connection again. It appears to be random, and happens in areas that were previously good coverage areas. Anyone else having this issue?

I have tried that exact process after speaking to someone at verizon tech support, and it did not help. I have also tried turning off the wifi and it would still show no data connection. None of this ever happened until I installed the new update, and while I do appreciate you guys trying, it is unacceptable to me to keep turning on and off my wifi and removing and reinserting my sim card. I never had to do that before this update. I am hoping to uninstall the update since my phone is not working properly since. As I type this, my phone currently has no data connection, and I am in a spot that always had very good 4g connection. Thanks

BobK406 I too started having data problems after the update. I got a new SIM card from a Verizon store and it seems to have helped in most places, but not at my work. I've even done a full factory reset. Spent an hour chatting with a support person (who was very nice) and now have a ticket in with the network engineers. Turning airplane mode on then off again helps get the short period of connection - I don't have to turn it all the way off and back on again.

Yes, my wife and I have the Samsung S4 and both of our phones updated on 5-4-2014. I used to NEVER have connection/reception/signal issues while sitting at my desk. Now it is ridiculous! I now have to resend messages over and over and over. I work 40 miles west of Phoenix, AZ, and I used to have 3G at my desk with green and orange arrows and 3 to 4 white bars. Now, I no longer have 3G, no green and orange arrows and only 2 to 3 white bars. This is ridiculous! I can't believe I am paying for this!! I have not EVER had signal issues until my S4 updated to Kit Kat yesterday, and my wife, who is in town, is having the exact same problems.

I did go to the verizon store yesterday and got a new SIM card, which did help for about 10 minutes. I then did a full factory reset, which helped until this morning. I now only have spotty 3g where I used to have full 4g. I will try the airplane mode trick until I go back to the verizon store and see what other options I have, if any. Thanks

After speaking to verizon tech support for the second time today, their only solutions are wait for an update and pay for data while not actually having an internet connection; exchange my very new phone for a certified pre used phone and hope that one works; or, buy a brand new phone at full price. I went with the used phone, since this seemed like the best worst option. My advice to anyone who hasn't installed the new KitKat update is DONT DO IT. You cannot uninstall it. It has seriously affected my Samsung S4 in a negative way and Verizon is incapable of helping fix it. Hence their only solution is try a new (used) phone! What a joke...

Let's get to the bottom of this service issue Skyke101! I understand that you are about 40 miles from Phoenix, what's your ZIP code? In the mean time reprogram your phone by powering off, then pull the SIM card for one minute, then reinsert SIM and power on. Keep us posted.

3rd party applications can cause conflict with the 4G network. prior to the last Samsung Galaxy s4 update may 2014 my phone worked correctly. After updating the 4 the 4G went erratic and would continue to drop signal. After Verizon support had me take the phone back to factory pull the battery and then replace the sim card the phone was replaced and still had the same issue. The lesson here is don't restore your data and application until you verify operation.

In my case a data compression program call Onavo extend was causing the 4G to be interrupted. Try removing data related applications and see if that helps.

That's ridiculous, i've read many times where people have done the power off and SIM card thing and I should not have to.... it did not work for them so why should it work for me?? Verizon should have made sure there would not be any conflicts before they released Kit Kat to the millions of people that have the S4!!

I'm experiencing the exact same problem that you (and many others) are describing with my S4. I'm in So Cal and had no problems whatsoever with 4G connectivity prior to the blasted update! I've done what's been recommended (short of factory reset, since it sounds like that hasn't worked for anyone yet) and nothing has helped. I can't keep resetting my phone to get connected to 4G, only to have it stay connected for 10 minutes. This is absolutely ridiculous. Verizon needs to fix this post haste!

I am having the same connection issues as well as other strange things. The clock widget goes wonky .. some of the numbers will suddenly show up in a different font from the others. When I open Twitter, my keyboard freezes and i have to reboot the phone to get rid of it. I have reset it to factory settings but it didn't help. I'll try the "pull sim card" solution and see if that makes a difference.

For as long as Verizon took to get this update out to us, I am shocked at the bugs. This is unacceptable!!!!

I'm having the exact same issue since the update. Verizon- is there any way to be reimbursed for the 4G signal I'm paying for that has now seemed to have disappeared since 4.4.2?

An update should only improve your device performance tt.0814. I'm sorry to hear about your difficulties. What troubleshooting steps have you tried. I recommend testing the device in safe mode for a full day if you retained all your apps during the update. http://tiny.cc/24sufx

I am also having issues - I think I responded on another of your posts. I just got a replacement phone today. It had a GREAT data signal. Downloaded all my synced info and then downloaded the new update. Like an idiot, I installed it. No more data for me. I am LIVID.

I am having the same issue. I went to the Verizon store and they replaced my SIM card. Customer service personnel said it worked fine - and it did for 5 minutes until I got back to work and my data connection is gone. I've always had a great connection at the office and everyone else's iPhones are working fine with the WiFi so I know it's a equipment problem. Perhaps we should all get unlimited data until a fix is presented. Send the invoice to Samsung?

Looks like you got screwed by Verizon just like everyone else that has an S4. The Kit kat update seriously hampers the phones reception. I and 3 guys that I work with used to get great reception on our S4 phones while we were at work, which is 40 miles west of Phoenix. Then, as soon as we got the Kit Kat update, all of a sudden we cant even send a text message! Nor can we get on the internet! It's a compatibility issue that Verizon won't admit to, they say to just turn your phone off, pull out the SIM card, put it back in and then turn it on again. It actually works, for about two texts, then it goes back to having no reception at all. Must be because some background program that conflicts with Verizon's version of Kit Kat finally boots up, creates the conflict and then boom, no reception. Another guy that sits right next to me at work just got an S5, and he gets the excellent reception that we S4 users used to get before we got the Kit Kat update. Maybe it's a Verizon scam to try and force S4 users to upgrade to the S5? And it's not just us at work 40 miles West of Phoenix. My wife also has an S4, and she works in town and she says her recepetion has gotten alot worse too once the update was applied.

Hey Antonio, I work 40 miles west of Phoenix, at the Palo Verde Nuclear Plant, which has a big contract with verizon to provide cellular service to all of it's managers. The problem is not my phone, nor is it any of my friends and co-workers phones. The problem is with Verizon's version of Kit Kat that was sent to S4 phones. EVERYONE THAT HAS AN S4 PHONE at PALO VERDE NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, run by APS, NOW HAS VERY VERY CRAPPY TO NO SERVICE IN AREAS THAT THEY USED TO GET SEMI-OK SERVICE... EVERY STINKIN ONE OF THEM! In addition to these issues I constantly get overheating messages while using Waze navigation. Battery also runs down faster....

Jonathan, since the update seems to be the problem, and not the hardware, can you address the issue to all of us as to when the software bugs are going to be worked out? This is ridiculous for us to be dealing with these problems that Verizon caused.

Verizon caused nothing. Place the blame where it belongs!

Google for making the OS update, and Samsung who made your device.

Verizon makes neither of these. They push it out when Samsung releases it to them. They test it and send it out good or bad.

I strongly believe that these device makers should do their own updates and not use Verizon to do it for them just like Apple does.

But then read the forum, Verizon is the blame for Apples iOS updates. When they are not even involved.

I want to make sure you have all the services that you need. If you go into Settings, Select Connections up in the top left, Tap on Data Usage, is there a greeen check mark in the Mobile Data? If so, please uncheck it and then place the check mark back into the box. Does the 4G come back up on the device? Please keep me posted.

bmore_jd We apologize for the frustration you and others are experiencing with the software update. We are in this together and waiting for a fix from the manufactuers. We do not like to see our customers upset with their devices. We have found that some users have had success with troubleshooting steps including soft and hard resets, clearing data and app cache. Have you tried any of those steps?

I received my certified pre-owned S4 Wednesday night. Tonight I have 1g speeds at home, if I can even get it to connect. I haven't really paid attention to my mobile speeds until tonight, when I tried to set up ISIS Wallet, as I stay connected to Wi-Fi at home. Prior to this phone I had a S3 and it consistently had 4g in the exact same area. I updated the phone as soon as I received it so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I am trying to SIM card trick now. I have tried everything else, short of a factory reset. ANY help at all would be greatly appreciated. I have to wonder, what's the point of having a contract with the fastest provider in country if you can't connect.

Let's get to the bottom of this signal issue wolfe69! I see that you were going to do a SIM card trick, how did it go after that? Did you remove SIM card for one minute and then reinserted and test? Is this speed issue only at home? Please test outside and around your area and let us know if signal improves. Since you have done basic troubleshooting, you may also want to do a hard reset and test. Keep us posted.

Mine is doing the same thing. Anyone have any ideas. Verizon sent a new SIM card, no luck. I believe it is caused by update to 4.4. Not getting the service I am paying for.

Same problems on our wo S4's after 4.4.2 update. I just got off long phone calls with Verizon & Samsung. They cannot offer any date when (or if) the next 4.4.4 update will be coming. They seem to be ignorant of this problem due to the update? They just offer "sim card" and "airplane" tricks that clearly do not address the underlying problem(s), and which do not work. I'm not about to hassle with a factory reset since there is NO indication this will work.

My phone will not always connect to WiFi and sometimes I have no 4G/3G signal at all. I've received a new SIM card and troubleshooting with countless VZW reps. Still no one could fix the problem that has to be known to VZW tech support by now. The last rep spent and hour and gave up, saying we'll just send a new phone and see if it helps. What a useless answer. And by the way, it did not help. Just an easy way to lose all your contacts and media off your device.

VZW: your service gets worse every year as I watch my bill go up. The coverage gets worse and I find more "dead zones" now that ever. I constantly compare my signal (phone/data) with friends who have AT&T and Sprint.....and they often have better service in more areas. I guess that's why VZW stopped running the "can you hear me now" ads??

I think it's time for all the people like me to go and try a different carrier and save some money ad headaches.
