Nokia announced Cyan availability 4 weeks ago. What is the rollout plan, Verizon?

Tomorrow, August 12, it will be 4 weeks since Nokia announced Cyan/8.1 availability, following on a months-long developer preview program. Although I understand Verizon's need to test this release before giving it to us OTA, it is inexcusable that we have had no communication AT ALL from VZW as to when we can expect to see it.

While I have been using 8.1 (and now 8.1.1) since I got my Icon a few months ago, I would like to have the latest firmware in order to take advantage of all the phone has to offer. At this time, VZW gives the appearance of neither knowing nor caring about delivering this update to us.

If there is a CS rep reading this, I would ask you to refrain from sending us to a non-informative news feed, and instead please work to bring some information here that would actually be helpful.

There are plenty to choose from

CS doesn't have the authority to release that information to paying customers. We have to sit on our hands and wait.

With the HTC One M8 coming out in 10 days on Verizon with 8.1, I would expect to see the release of 8.1 to all devices within that time frame. I, too, have been running DP8.1.1 and would like the update as well. I hope I am not just being optimistic about the HTC release coinciding with the 8.1/Cyan release.

I was told by a Red Shirt don't expect to see the update until after the release of the HTC One M8/W8 for windows. Verizon is using this to sell more devices to people looking to upgrade and get the newest phone where you can have it new on the HTC or wait 1 to 2 weeks after the HTC and your older device will feel kinda new with an updated OS. its set to sell more phones that is all they are doing lets see Im due for an upgrade a new device with 8.1 or the Icon with 8 and no word when it will get the 8.1. why would you buy a new phone if your old ($0.0 because you have payed it off) one has all the same OS features as the $200+ one yea new is cool but the HTC is not that ground breaking. VZW wants your money and this is how they go about doing it. Update is done there is just no release date as they want to see the new device kick off the update on VZW. Say what you want I know what I know prove me wrong or delete my post all it will do is prove me right. Long live the WE CAN'T HEAR YOU NOW because we dont care network .

It wouldn't surprise me at all if that the tactic. A stupid one at best. It's not like they are going to sell new phones to users that already own a Windows Phone knowing that the update will be released at some time.

Hopefully it's just speculation by a clueless red shirt.

HTC One M8 is (removed)compared to Nokia. The quality of HTC hardware has always been (removed).

VERIZON is doing this on purpose. They are purposely withholding the WP 8.1 update so we will go buy a (removed) HTC with 8.1 already loaded.(removed) VERIZON.

Ping This. I had an HTC phone that was not updated past android2.x or something. Pretty disappointed in all parties to that fiasco, but likely the balance was shared between HTC and Verizon.

I do want the bloody update and I will be sorely angered if it rolls out after the release of the HTC phone. R U KIDDING ME VERIZON?

Well I went through chat with Verizon yesterday and was told by that person that I needed to contact Nokia because the Icon I have should have received an update. I contacted Nokia and was told the update is still in testing with Verizon....someone needs to update their customers because software I need to use for work is only supported on Windows 8.1.

While I don't want to apologize for Verizon, I will say that I'd rather they test the heck out of it and get it right rather than release some flawed/buggy version to an unsuspecting public. For now we have the Preview for Developers and it's not bad. I do really want the Cyan update, but waiting another week or two is not going to kill me. What would really kill me would be installing some half-baked Cyan update, borking my Lumia Icon, and having to use an old BlackBerry as a spare until a fix was released. Now THAT is a special kind of hell.

Apparently Verizon does seem to care about its users', so maybe we need to look to a carrier that will provide the upgrade and leave Verizon to themselves.

I really wish Verizon employees would stop getting on here and trying to convince us that somehow Verizon is doing us a favor by taking weeks to test software updates then claiming another "2 weeks won't kill us.". REALLY! If Verizon is that INCOMPETENT that they can't test one or two phones on their network faster than AT&T can test AND release 3 phones on their network, then they need NEW EMPLOYEES! Or perhaps a class action lawsuit by Windows Phone and Android users to force Verizon to allow manufacturer direct updates like Apple receives!

Not sure why you feel so compelled to comment on these threads, but whatever. The minimum "obligation" of Verizon, as I see it, is to simply COMMUNICATE about what is going on. If they said, "hey gang, we are it testing for the next 3 years and we'll release it in 2017," it wouldn't be what we want to hear, but at least it would be information we could act on. The silent treatment and/or pretending no one has even heard of Cyan is what's unacceptable.

OBVIOUSLY Verizon Wireless, as a carrier, works with Microsoft/Nokia on these devices, and OBVIOUSLY Cyan has been released to carriers, Verizon included. So simply tell us what your plan is for rollout, and we can all go on our way and let these discussions get back to more important issues.

Anyone messing with software/firmware updates knows that giving out release dates is a sure fire method to draw EVERYBODY'S attention. Then if the schedule slips the media grabs it and pumps it up, forums become even bigger flaming pits of hate and acrimony, pundits predict cataclysms of Biblical proportions for the business, competitors publicize it, etc. etc. In the end it's a smoother and less risky path to just keep quiet about it and let the smaller percentage of users that care about it thrash and squirm. It also makes changes in the rollout plan much easier to manage since the public was in the dark anyway.

p.s. I want my Cortana :smileysad:

I'm not says put out press on a release schedule. If the schedule slips and you don't update the page than there is an issue.

Dates slip all the time and proper communications takes care of the noise.

Even with the Droid Bionic ICS fiasco, at least the device appeared on a Verizon-published document, as slated to receive the update. Here we have a flagship device, a (relatively) high-profile update, and a user base primed by the 8.1DP, and Verizon goes silent. Not a good experience.

(removed) they really don't want to release the 8.1 update to the Nokia customers! I have just today seen an article that has a chat session posted that shows a Verizon rep LYING to a customer. Oh well guess they can do that.

Why would Verizon want to keep from rolling out 8.1/Cyan to Nokia customers?? Makes no sense. Verizon has nothing to gain by holding it back, and everything to lose (like customers), not to mention a ton of bad publicity.

Verizon does have something to gain by not releasing 8.1/Cyan. Phone sales. In attempting to gather information regarding the update, I was twice given the "option" to "upgrade my phone to the new HTC." Verizon is delaying the 8.1/Cyan update for the older models in an attempt to convince us to upgrade to newer models rather than keeping a perfectly good phone with the update. As if I would ever trade in my Nokia for an HTC! Really!

Also, the issue should not be "when will we get the update?" but rather "why do iPhone users not have this headache?" As paying customers who pay the same monthly fee for service as iPhone users do, should be demanding that Verizon provide Microsoft with the same "pre-testing" capability as Apple gets. If I got on a bus and paid $1 and was allowed to take a seat, yet the next person got on the bus, paid $1 and was told that person had to wait until the seat was tested for safety before they could take a seat, how is this fair? How is this not discrimination? This is what we need to file as a complaint with the FCC! I did and you should too! We need to change this practice, not only at Verizon, but with ALL U.S. carriers!

Verizon has no loyalty to customers at all. You want to know any information about the Windows 8.1 roll out for the ICON , they won't give it to you. they will just continue to lie and steal your money. I did though yesterday get the roll out schedule from NOKIA and according to them there are no plans for the ICON or the Lumia 929 at all in the future. Which makes me wonder why Verizon continues along on with their charade as to a release date, unless of course its to sell more devices with patently false statements as to a real upgrade to Windows 8.1.

It's called a NDA. Harass Nokia until they give you the information as they have no part of the NDA as it's their product. They manufacture and produce the product.

I said it before... For any real case you need to see if it passed the FCC for Verizon. Only the manufacturer can submit this. After this point when Nokia says the carriers have it I would believe them, but not one person has shown it has... Nokia could simply rectify it by showing the documentation that it did pass the FCC.

Why would the Nokia site say that the Cyan release is "Under Testing" instead of "Not Available" if they weren't going to support the 929 or the Icon. Where is your proof from Nokia?

Certification stage means it's nokia going through the FCC and the cosortiums(CDMA, WiFi, and bluetooth licensing). Verizon wouldn't have any forthcoming information as they are not the ones submitting the software. Goodluck getting the FCC or Nokia to get into more detail.

I read with amusement it mirrors what I am reading here on the Verizon Help Forum.

The same where is my update, AT&T pushed it out, I am going to buy my device elsewhere. The only difference is T-Mobile said look for later in the year. And their news central as Verizon wireless directs you to.

As I wrote many times they release when they want to. No matter how many complaint posts.

Looks like we are going to have to get our Senators and Congressman involved in this fight. Something has to be done in this country to mandate updates be provided either directly from manufactures or requireing testing be completed in a shorter period of time! 5 to 6 weeks is just REDICULOUS! I'm contacting Senator Mary Landrieu and Senator David Vitter of Louisiana! If Apple can get direct updates, the rest of us should as well!

Why is that? This is a contract negotiation between Apple and phone providers. If someone negotiates a contract with a company, those terms DO NOT automatically transfer to all other contracts. I'm sure NBA players would like it though. They would LOVE to automatically get the contract terms LeBron James received with Cleveland simply because of the argument "If LeBron gets those terms, the rest of us should as well!" With your argument, why would any company spend so much time/manpower/money on contract negotiations if they could simply get the same terms other companies get once their negotiations have finalized????

So now we're theorizing that it's because of an NDA that we have no information? Hmm. MS/Nokia announces Cyan update available 7/15. Then their website says: "Update status: Under testing (undergoing final testing with Microsoft, country or operator to achieve approval.)" Then, Verizon says "hey customers, we have the update and we're testing it. Hope to be done by xx/xx/2014!"

What has been disclosed that shouldn't have been? Please. The issue here is the complete lack of communication, pure and simple.

It's not theorizing... Big companies always sign NDAs and dates are covered by NDAs ALWAYS. Whenever the company that is doing the work or releasing said product says anything that's up to them. Any company working with said company can't release any said information.

My guess is that V is giving their new HTC One for Windows phone some time to be their unique 8.1 offering. It only went on sale a few weeks ago, and if they updated all phones to 8.1 there would be less incentive to look at the HTC.

Elector, you are taking a decision made by the Supreme Court about shareholders suing a company for fraud and applying it to something that has no relation to the rulings the court made.

The Supreme Court did not ban all class-action suits.

Myself personally, I've given up on the fact that Verizon would even consider giving any customer the slightest possible idea of when the rollout should take place. Windows Phone from what I understand has only about just under 4% of the U.S. Market share, so a priority is not an issue with Verizon at this time. Which is a sad thing, because ANY Verizon Wireless customer should be given top priority. And I'm not just talking about standard customer service. I'm talking about ALL areas, including software updates and such. Granted, it does take time to make sure the software being offered needs to be in excellent working order. But when you have countless inquires from Windows Phone owners, and continual silence on the part of Verizon, for me it tends to tarnish the relationship between the customer and the provider. Meaning, it's no longer the issue of Windows Phone but rather an issue with customer devotion. At this point it wouldn't matter if I had an iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, or an old fashioned flip phone. What would matter is how the provider supports it's customer base. Verizon, you need to either act on pushing the update out, or at the very least you owe it to your customers on giving an estimated time schedule and/or status of functionality on this update.

Giving estimates on code that you don't even produce isn't going to happen. Nokia/Microsoft wrote the code, and are the ones that need to get it ready and give estimates. All the devices you mentioned... from the iPhone to Windows Phone... When have you ever heard an estimated release date that came from carriers. ALL of them came from the manufacturers. Manufacturers have already admitted multiple times carriers has less control than the hyperbole being passed around on the internet. Manufacturers do love it with misplaced blame happens because it doesn't hurt their sales figures. People were still buying HTC devices here in the states while in Europe their sales numbers plummeted and now HTC trying to pull themselves out the hole.

Doesn't matter if it regarding Windows Phone, Android, or iPhone. Propriety code isn't given out to anyone including carriers. Show me a company that will give source code to someone outside the company? Even Google which is one of the most open source friendly companies out there keeps their code private(AOSP is missing proprietary code). Manufacturers already showed their Android update process correct? Then look at Nokia's generalized process on their update page. If you separate Nokia remarks by commas you can see where in the processes line up with manufacturers have said the process is. Carriers are hands off until testing phase. Manufacturers gives a set of options based on what they are willing to give. Everything is give to manufacturers in advance.

That's how manufacturers make money... Much like any company out there they have to decide on a product they want to sell...

They actually prefer NOT to spend resources update anything. OS developers have INCENTIVE to do so. Google makes money off peoples data. Apple makes money off iTunes, and keeping people on their platform. Microsoft is on the same boat between Apple and Google model. So producing updates is important to them to make people keep going gaga over the OS. Their licensing agreement to use their respective OS requires updates to happen for a time period.

Show me how manufacturers have incentive to update the OS other than sales? They make money pushing people buying devices they do not have incentive updating devices. They make an agreement with OS developers to update devices(There's plenty of information about this whether iOS, Android, or Windows Phone) which is part of the licensing agreement. If that wasn't there I am willing to put money on it that devices would be updated less if at all.

Cool story... I suggest you start making your own devices and sign some agreements and spend overhead. You'll see how much control manufacturers actually have. Just make sure it isn't CDMA as you'd have to deal with Qualcomm testing which takes additional time for you to release devices.

I recently read that Microsoft is working on the latest firmware update for the Lumia line called "Lumia Denim". Lumia Denim will add some really nice features and updates to the camera and the ability to access Cortana via passive activation (using your voice by simply saying "Hey Cortana.") I also read that there will be three new phones that will arrive with Denim already installed (the Lumia 730, 735 and 830). There will also be three existing phones that will have Denim "available for download very soon." These three phones are the 930, 1520 and the Icon.

Does anyone think it's possible that the reason we haven't received the Cyan firmware update yet is because Verizon and Microsoft are currently testing the new Denim firmware update and plan to skip Cyan altogether? I sure would LOVE that! Maybe they will release Cyan firmware update for the 928 at the same time? Thoughts anyone?

That sounds like CDMA signed keys by Qualcomm, and their testing which I mentioned earlier in one of these threads, and there's plenty of documentation on this. Ironically it got passed off as hearsay or fear mongering... But hey what do I know?

Thanks a bunch Big Red. That was sarcasm if you couldn't tell. First your sales rep tried to talk me out of the Icon and into an S5, then you haven't updated a single Windows phone before AT&T is complete with upgrades. Why bother carrying them at all if you don't want to be bothered with them? I bought the Icon with the assumption that a fairly new device would surely get the soon coming WP 8.1 update. Guess that makes me the fool.
