Verizon shipped me a new Samsung SCS-2U01 Network Extender on 3/27/14 and it booted up (4 steady blue lights) and connected with my Samsung Galaxy SIII Android v. 4.3 providing 4 -5 bars of signal (initially). When I return to my apartment or turn on the phone in my apartment, I hear the Network Extender connection confirmation beeps when I place or receive calls, hear the "You are connected to the Network Extender" message when I dial *48, and see a "Connected to Network Extender" message near the bottom of the phone's home screen. After a few minutes, however, the phone still shows "Network Extender" but reverts to only 1 - 2 bars of signal and occasionally drops calls. This leads me to think the phone bypassing the Network Extender and re-connecting on-air, instead of through the Internet, with the nearest cell tower site.
As advised by the Verizon phone support technician I spoke with about this problem, I downloaded and installed the "Phone Info" app that should have allowed me to set the phone to connect using CDMA, only. However, when I attempted to open the app, a message popped up stating "Phone Info has stopped working." Verizon Wireless Community posts indicate this is a known issue with the "Phone Info" app dating at least as far back as September 2013 or whenever the Samsung Galaxy S-series phones received the Android version 4.3 update.
Is there another work-around that will enable me to set my phone to work only in CDMA mode? (I don't particularly care if it results in my not having access to the 4G network, as long as I have dependable access to voice service.)
