does anyone know if there is a way you can retrieve erased picture messages from  your  blackberry, mine said some updates were ready to be downloaded and when i did,it erased some pictures that a had as text messages, now they are gone but  I still have the texts!

You can try highlighting the message and pressing menu and seeing if you get the option to download or download more. If not you may check on your SD card to see if the pics saved there. If not unfortunately there is no other way, unless you had backed your phone up on Desktop Manager through a PC after you got those messages and before you updated.
