Windows Phone DAY at Verizon 8/19/14

Looks like Verizon is poised to make all of the Windows Phone pain go away tomorrow. First, for all of those HTC 8 owners that Verizon refuses to updated - there is a new HTC Windows Phone you can order tomorrow. Isn't that fantastic.

And if rumors hold true, all of rest of the VZW Windows Phone Owners will get 8/1 Cyan starting tomorrow as well.

Why, it's as if Verizon really does care about their Windows Phone Customers.

Okay. I give up. How is the release of the new HTC phone an indicator of updates for the current lineup of Windows Phones?

Don't get me wrong. I'm running the DP on my Lumia Icon but very anxious to see the Cyan update so I hope you're right, but I'm not holding my breath.

About 2 weeks ago, the date of the 19th for Verizon to release 8.1 Cyan was floating around on a few WP Forums. With the announcement of the HTC release coming tomorrow - it makes sense to tie the 2 together. After all, only 365 days in a year. VZW has to spend at least one of them focused on the Windows Phone.

HTC 8 that Verizon refuses to update? Please elaborate because all I've heard is the 8S can't get the new update because of hardware restrictions. Please reference a source that says Verizon has no intention to release 8.1 to these phones.

Last month, Verizon delivered updated Lumia drivers as a part of their online update. I am not sure if they were required or not for the 8.1 Cyan update, but they were delivered nevertheless.

In order for Verizon to deliver 8.1 Cyan to the HTC 8X and 8S, drivers are needed first. See article below.

(Of course, most who own the 8X or 8S are due for an upgrade anyway. Perhaps the announcement of this new HTC Windows Phone is to motivate current HTC customers to switch? If I were an 8S or 8X customer, I would be pretty aggravated that my device was never updated.)

Well, looks like WindowsPhone "Day" was a bust for Lumia users waiting on Cyan. I figure if we don't see it today or tomorrow, we'll lose another week, and it's on to week 6 and counting with no communication from Verizon.

I signed up for two (2) years just to get the Icon. The salesman said I should see the new update (with Cortana) in a couple of weeks on their flagship Windows Phone. I am pretty angry now that the HTC One comes out with the update. What can one do short of paying ETF?

File an FCC complaint demanding that Verizon provide the same direct update on Windows Phones that Apple iPhone users get. We pay the same monthly service fee as iPhone users, yet they receive a "free bonus" of not waiting for updates like we have to. It's a form of discrimination and we need to fight this with the FCC. http://www.fcc.gov/complaint.

While you are at it, add being able to use iMessage and Facetime. We pay the same monthly fee yet are not able to use those either.

iMessage and Facetime are Apple software programs restricted by Apple to only work on Apple devices. Verizon has nothing to do with those software programs. Windows Phone users have Skype vs Facetime (which I prefer because it's not limited to only one type of device) and a multitude of messaging programs/apps.

Let me preface this by saying I love the Icon and WP software. I came from an older version of Android and I much prefer WP, even at the 8.0 release. I'm happy with the VZW network and customer support in general. That said, I'm not pleased with certain aspects of the "experience" so far:

1. I was told by a VZW employee that 8.1 was only a couple of weeks away when I bought the phone. Four weeks later. I was again told, "just a couple of weeks". That was 2 weeks ago.

2. The user manual that came on the phone is for 8.1.....not 8.0. So, many of the features in the manual aren't really in the software. Yes, there is a disclaimer, but that's not the point.

3. Some of the VZW advertising referred to 8.1 features that obviously weren't available at the time of purchase.

4. As others have mentioned, it's sort of a smack in the face the way they have rolled out the latest WP phones with 8.1, but still haven't updated the Icon.

I can appreciate the fact that the high volume sellers get preferential treatment, but, good business practice dictates a degree of customer care for all. I'm confident VZW will make that happen.

Yeah we tested it last night. We decided it was buggy so it may take us another 12-16 weeks before I release it.

I want the new Windows phones to sell well over the holiday season.

Please get real. We don't work for Verizon. Just customers. But if I did do certification for this phone OS

I would let it out next year just for all the misinformation I keep reading and blaming and threats I read.

If I was at the FCC reading these so called threats to Verizon about give me my update, its the law, I spoke to a high up mucky muck and he said we will get it, (not actually any given date) and it is harmful because the security on my phone is at risk yada yada yada.

When the carriers are ready to approve it you will receive it.

But don't all be running back here with "the windows update bricked my device"

When Verizon does release it and if there are any issues, I wouldn't blame Verizon for the issue. However, what I will do is ask why is there an issue? If Verizon is supposed to be working so thoroughly in this process to ensure there are no issues before allowing it to go through, there shouldn't be any issues. Verizon should have caught any problems and sent it back to Microsoft? Isn't that what you've been saying all along? Isn't that what you've been screaming the testing is for? That this is the reason we are waiting so long for this update? If, as you've stated, Verizon is being so thorough and taking so much time to be maticulous in testing this update, then there really shouldn't be any issues. But if there are, I won't blame Verizon for the issue, but I will question, and I mean REALLY QUESTION, the testing process by Verizon. And I do believe it would be warranted!

Based on the article below from MJF on ZD Net - WP 8.1 Cyan was released 7/15/14.

8/19/14 would make the release 1 month and 4 days stale. Verizon could have saved face by releasing both 8.1 Cyan and the new HTC M8 on the same day. Instead, VZW has to drop the price of a brand new flagship device to $49 just to move some units before AT&T starts selling them. Great job VZW Marketing.

8/31/14 marks the end of August. For the sake of you calendar day counters, let's just say that 8.1 Cyan is a clean month and a half stale.

As of today - here are the devices not updated to 8.1 Cyan yet. Notice a Big Red trend? So there are a lot of VZW phones there. Don't you think that someone with a brain at Verizon would want to start testing the phones a little sooner than the day of software release? Evidently, this needs to be called to their attention. There needs to be a little more urgency than 6+ weeks and surely more.
