Why can't I use wi-fi after the update?

Safe mode? not sure how to do that on this phone. will check it out.

I am able to connect to the internet via Verizon 4G. The phone will connect to the wifi, but will not allow chrome to access the internet via wifi.

Your suggestion about safe mode,(press and hold power button simultaneously pressing and holding power on, on screen.) now allows me to connect google to wifi.

Now how to isolate which updated app is causing the issue?

In my case, once I went into safe mode, my droid instantly accessed my wifi, and started to download about 8 application updates, including 2 goggle plus updates. I restarted in normal mode, and now everything appears to be back to normal.

My Maxx was stuck on 1X and was not transferring data via WiFi despite looking like it was connected. This left me with effectively NO data on my phone. I was seconds from calling and asking for a hardware replacement when I found this post. Rebooting to safe mode allowed my phone to connect to 4G and then WiFi which allowed it to download two Google Play related updates. The phone actually rebooted itself out of safe mode while I waited for more potential updates, but low and behold, when it came back up, 4G and WiFi. It would appear to be fixed. Pretty serious bug in this update, though.

Well, never mind. My WiFi is still unstable. Any heavy transfer causes the connection to bounce.

Updated to 23.3.24.en.US on Oct 31 and nothing but problems since with WiFi connecting/disconnecting. Phone works fine off VZW network alone. I have added no other new applications to the phone and all other WiFi devices on my network are having no issues with the connection. This update did something to mess it up!!!! Please respond with a answer Verizon that doesn't involve the obvious like powering down phone, network, etc. as I have tried all that. Thanks.

you might try the safe mode option described above anyway. Even though you have no new applications, your old ones may need to update in order to be compatible with the new software, and could be causing your wifi to glitch, which makes them unable to update. I would give it a shot anyway.

arzennmaster, let's keep it moving! You will need to delete each application one at a time to determine which application is causing the issue. Unfortunately, we're unable to determine which application is causing this issue.

Is it possible to remove or roll back this update to my previous versions?

Looks like I spoke too soon. the safe mode reboot that allowed the update of a few apps in safe mode that seemed to have corrected the issue was very short lived.

After this Verizon update, I am still not able to access any WiFi sources, and the only solution offered here is to...... one by one remove my apps to isolate the one that this latest update is incompatible with. most of my apps are business related some of which are used extensively every day.

I would rather roll back or remove the update and gain the functionality that I lost when this was installed, rather than spend hours of precious time attempting to find the needle in the haystack.

Is this possible?

Well, I bit the bullet and did a factory reset and reload...and it has been working in the 4-5 hours since...

I've been having a similar problem with my Droid Mini. Ever since the system update, my wifi connection at home has been extremely slow, and usually will not load/update facebook, and the traffic layer on google maps loads very slow now. Other apps, such as pandora and chrome have been working fine. I have also stopped automatically receiving emails even though my auto-sync data is on. I received an error the other day with the play store saying I needed to turn off restricting background data in order to access the play store. I checked the setting, and it was already turned off. I turned it on and then back off to make sure, and still received the error message It hasn't come up again since I restarted the phone.

Everything works fine with 4G service and with the wifi at my office. I have basic internet at home (3 mbps download rate). However, I've never had problems at home until last week after the update installed (I've had the phone for 6 months). I tried putting the phone into safe-mode twice, installed all updates, deleted and reinstalled Facebook, and deleted some other apps with no luck. Is the factory reset working for this problem? I don't want to go through it if it won't work.

LWeasel, we don't want this to be an ongoing issue for you. Have you downloaded a few 3rd party applications to your device? If so, some application software can conflict with the recent software update. Try uninstalling any unwanted applications and power your device off/on to soft reset it. Keep us posted.

LasinaH, I have a number of third party apps installed, but 99% are well known solidly developed apps not known for causing OS issues. I've been an Android developer since the platform rose to popularity, so I'm well aware of app/OS interaction. The third party apps I run are necessary to my daily doings with the exception of Facebook and a couple of games which are never run. I've removed these apps and still have no WiFi connectivity.

Also, maw0709, given that your wifi issue only seems to be with your home network, have you tried manually forgetting the home network and readding it? Or powering off and on your router? I've also heard that sometimes, for some reason, there could be some settings you may need to put into your router admin page if its only this phone having the issue, but I figure we can cross that bridge if it gets that far. Kind of a pain.

Arzennmaster, unfortunately, I've never seen any mobile software update be reversible, so we have to work with what we've got. I would suggest doing the factory data reset, as that would most likely solve the issue, as testified to by the one person on this thread who has attempted it. I also might suggest trying to turn off your battery saver, in the battery screen from your settings menu. That is based on a hunch, and may not work, but it can't hurt to try.

I tried both of those with no luck. My laptop is working fine, so I do not think it's an issue with my router or modem. I did reset both, though.

Well, I get that, but in the same vein, you're device also works fine with your work wifi, right? So it must be something about a bad combination of variables between your phone and your router. Have you tried changing the router channel?

Ive seen toggling airplane mode on and off sometimes help this kind of thing too.

I too have had the same thing happen, I put my phone into safe mode and it did all sorts of updates. So i will test it later when i am at home, to see if that fixes it.

Placing my Droid Maxx in Safe mode does allow wifi to work. So, now I've tried everything, first uninstalling the few apps I have and then a factory reset. Wifi still is broken. I've absolutely zero problems with my device until this nasty upgrade. I use data extensively at work and I need wifi on my device to function properly.

I'll be going to my Verizon store tomorrow and demand that either Verizon give me unlimited data or replace the device all together. I really loved the Maxx and it is incredible that we have to go through this. Frustrated.

We want you to be able to use all of the device functions on your Droid Maxx max0709. May I ask have you completed a factory reset after the update? If not then I would suggest doing so. As always, please verify that you have your info backed up before the reset, retest, and keep us posted.

Yes, I have spent a number of hours trying to restore my phones wifi, including a factory reset. This update has broken wifi there is no question about it. I am now having to use my 4GLTE instead of wifi and I have a limited data plan. This is unacceptable.

ArnettH_VZW: First, I have a Droid Mini as per my initial post, not a Droid Maxx. Either way, no I have not tried the factory reset - I am trying to avoid that, and it doesn't look like that has worked for others.

What exactly does the factory reset delete - all apps and pictures? Does it delete contacts? Anything else?

It seems obvious that something went very wrong with the system update last week. Are any steps being taken to fix it?

That does make sense, since it seems like a connection or speed issue. I will have to look up how to change the channel when I get home. I'll also try the battery saver off and airplane mode suggestions.

Thanks so much for your suggestions! I want to try as much as I can before I do the factory reset, especially since it seems that is not fixing the problem.

A factory data reset will delete everything you have put on your phone and put it in the state it was in when you first got the phone, like direct from the factory. This being so, you need not worry about losing all of this information. My suggestion, if it comes down to this, would be to use a free program called Samsung Kies to backup your information first, and restore the data to your phone after the reset.

I have found that this is a much more successful way to do restorals and software updates for that matter compared to going over wifi. Some data seems to get sometimes either corrupted or left out when doing wifi updates and restorals, and this will instead have a hard line protocol for less risk.

Even for those who may have already tried a fdr, I would maybe suggest trying again using the Samsung Kies platform.

I can understand the concern with the factory reset but it may help you with your issues. It will delete all data back to factory settings. Make sure you back up all your data before performing this step. Keep us posted.

Don't hold your breath. I did one, worked for a few days, did a second, which didn't help at all. :-(

So after doing factory restore and the phone eating up all my data i contacted Verizon about this and after a little troubleshooting they decided that it was time to send me a new phone, I got it last night and now it keeps trying to do the same update but i keep pushing it off so right now my phone is running version 21.11.21 with no issues as long as i do not let it try to download that crap version

Being without WiFi is really getting old.

I've uninstalled all my add on apps, then did a soft reset, to no avail. I'm not about to do a hard reset, and still not have it function.

This phone isn't even a year old, and whatever is going on is eating away at my battery life as well. no matter what I do, the d****d thing ends up with less than 40%-50% in a 12-14 hr period of nearly non use.

Way to go Verizon.

Thanks so much for doing all that you have done so far, arzennmaster. We have been in contact with Motorola who has determined some devices have encountered a failure of the WiFi chip set. At this time, they recommend replacing the device if you still have a warranty. For those out of warranty, Motorola will be able to repair the device when you send it in to them.

Just wanted to share that there is light at the end of the tunnel, After a Verizon rep deemed that there was an issue with my Droid Maxx he sent me a new one after receiving it at no cost it did the same update again and this time the wifi partially worked on some wifi but not mine at home, so what i ended up doing was a factory reset on my router and now the wifi on my phone works great at home now. With my phone working now my data plan is not getting chewed up like before. Hope this will help :smileyhappy:

I have noticed the battery drains incredibly fast now too. I thought it was something to do with try to auto-refresh when it can't on my home WIFI (still...). I used to be able to go 2+ days without having to charge it. Now I have to keep an eye on it all the time. The phone also does not provide a warning tone or message at 15% as it did prior to the system update. The only thing I found that helps it is to turn wifi, auto-refresh, and Bluetooth off at night so it's not trying to connect to anything. I also have my location/GPS on battery saving mode most of the time.

grumpyalbertm - This is the problem I have been having since the update - WIFI works everyplace but my house fine, and some apps work at home, some do not, and my email will usually not auto-refresh. I spoke with a family member who is an IT person over the holiday, and he suggested to update the firmware on the router (which I think is similar to what you did). Unfortunately, my computer is out of commission right now so I can't try it yet. Once I do, I will be sure to post the results. This problem is becoming quite annoying, especially now that I do not have another internet source at home.
