When I use ONLY GPS mode (to avoid data usage), my phone just sits and searches. Anybody else with this problem? Anybody got a fix, other than a FR, which I don't want to do.
S3 with Kit kat.
Some further sleuthing on my part. I have installed an app to check GPS status. It "sees" anywhere from 18-22 satellites, but doesn't have a fix on a single one of them. Showing 0/22 on the "fix/sats" screen. Strange that it can detect the sats but not get a reading.
It is called AGPS for a reason. It acquires information from the towers to assist in establishing the first fix. You can let out grind for ten minutes or so, our you can let out download the assistance data it needs.
With GPS Status and toolbox, go into menu and reset the state and download assistance data and tell me how long with it setting at least three satellites it takes to acquire a fix.
Practically, if you have data disabled, you aren't going to see a map either.
Replace the word out with the word it. Apologies.
Hate to sound ungrateful since I came here looking for some help from people smarter than me, but you're wrong on both counts.
I have the location mode set to "high accuracy", which is SUPPOSED to use towers, wifi, and satellites to calculate location. Still no fix on the sats (O/26).
As for needing data for maps, there are a number of stand alone apps that don't need a data connection. The one I'm trying to use is Navfree. Many Americans use it in Europe without using expensive data, because it depends on the GPS sats to calculate location.
But thanks for trying to be of assistance. There are several threads complaining about the S3 GPS not working after recent updates as well as a couple of fixes. I've tried everything except a FR to no avail.
No one from Verizon has chimed in, so I'll bump this back to the top. Verizon......still waiting?
Bumping for you, as I am unable to connect to gps as well. I am extremely un-technically inclined, and thoroughly frustrated. I use the running app "Strava", and was working fine until maybe a week ago. Now I cannot get a signal. I've checked all of my location settings and they are all enabled. I am at a loss.
Funny, I originally posted this over two weeks ago (almost three now) and not a single Verizon rep has chimed in. Where are all the scripted "we want to help you" or "lets get this figured out" responses?
Try pulling off the back cover and tightening each of the silver screws with a #0 size Phillips screwdriver. The screws keep the motherboard electrically connected to the antennae, and if they come loose or if some little corrosion builds up you have to tighten things up. It worked on my phone - up to a point. First time I did the fix the GPS was solid for a month after symptoms like yours. Now I get a day out of it.
Thanks. I saw that suggestion in another thread and gave it a try.The screws were all tight, so it didn't help. Still say it is a result of KitKat, since it only started after the update.
I apologize for the delay in reply pzjagd1. I know how important it is to have your GPS up and running, I'm happy to help. The steps below should help your GPS issues:1. Ensure that the device is being used outdoors and has a clear view of the sky for best results. 2. Enable all location services on the device to optimize your GPS performance. Apps > Settings > Location Services> Check all boxes3. Enable Wi-Fi for faster, more accurate Location locking. 4. Soft Reset the device 5. Clear Application Data and Uninstall Updates for Google Maps Apps>Settings>Application Manager>ALL>Maps>Clear Data and Uninstall Updates 6. Ensure that the device is using the most recent Software Version. Apps > Settings > About Phone > Software Update > Check New
Thank you for replying. Even though I have done all you suggest before, in order to humor you, I followed your instructions step by step. As I suspected, it still doesn't work. I've even done a factory reset already, that you will probably suggest as my next step. And no, GPS does not work in safe mode either.
Why oh why won't Verizon accept that KitKat is the culprit and expend some effort to get it fixed?
gonna bump this up to see if I can get a CORRECT answer.
I'm having the same problem as well. Ever since the KK upgrade, GPS will not work. I've not tried the factory reset yet, but am not hopeful it will help.
I am having the same problem. I can't use either of my navigation apps. But what is weird is that it didn't work for a while after I got KitKat, then I went on a trip to upstate NY and it started working. It worked for a while when I got back, but has stopped again.
Make sure for Location, you are set to High-Accuracy. ???
I am having the same issue with my S4. Since the update GPS does not work. I also tried a full reset and even had a replacement phone sent under waranty...as soon as the update is installed no GPS. I will be going back to Verizon again today to get resolution!
Tell us how they address the issue.
Ever since I upgraded to kitkat the GPS will not lock on. I've factory reset the phone and brought it to Samsung at bestbuy who flashed the phone. Still will not work. Called Verizon many times and a couple reps say its a known issue for a small number of phones and no fix available.
I'm having the same issue. It started after the latest update. I've done all the fixes mentioned and it will work for a little while, then goes out again. Extremely frustrating. Every time I heard "GPS Signal Lost" I cringe. GPS is the main reason I bought a smart phone in the first place. I can't use my running apps, can't use navigation reliably. I am really frustrated and really angry. Hope that enough of us will post and otherwise contact Verizon and/or Samsung so they will fix this issue. I was loving my S4 up until this happened.
I'm having the same issue and a factory reset did nothing but waste time...the latest update to my phone at the end of October screwed up so many things. Why do they do this send out updates the screw up our phones?
Make sure you have Settings | Date and time set to "Automatic date & time" and "Automatic time zone" (i.e. both checked).
Also, make sure you have Settings | Location set to Mode High Accuracy.
Next, download GPS Status and Toolbox, and go into Manage A-GPS State. Reset the state, and Download the assistsnce data. Go outside where the view of the sky is unobscured. Your TFF (Time to First Fix) will be long. Subsequent to that though, it should re-lock fairly quickly.
Good luck.
i have been having the same issue since the KK update... i have tried everything listed on this topic twice with no luck... I did find this info on another forum and tried it and so far today its worked perfectly like it used to... per the other forum... the weather channel ap and another weather ap seems to be the issue... it instructed to go to those aps and un-activate gps location tracking function and lock them to a specific zip code... it also said to remove updates to google maps (which i had already done)
this seems to have fixed the issue!!!
Yes, mine won't connect. Using GPS Test I can see 14-20 satellites with 4 or 5 past .7 but none are in use and it can't get a fix. I'm a software engineer and this seems like a software error. I chatted with HTC customer service. They admitted there is a problem and they're working on it.
I've tried all the workarounds in other posts and nothing worked for me. I have an HTC One HTC6500LVW.
Let me know if you find something out.
Here is the fix for Galaxy S phones and it has nothing to do with software updates. I've been through all of that with Verizon support .
Here is the You Tube video on how to fix this problem:

All you need is a small (#000) Phillips-head screwdriver that you will find at a local Home Depot for less than $6.00
