S5 update caused micro SD card to be unreadable.

I loaded the Verizon patch update last night. now my 32G micro SD card is unreadable, by the phone. The card is fine. I off loaded all the photos onto the laptop. reformatted it. phone still will not access the card. Says its blank or unrecognized. Phone fails to reformat it too. Nice update!! So is there something that I have to do to access the card or wait for a patch to be issued?

You might give this a try.. Run the phone through a system cache clear, see if that solves the issue if not run another one and you might have to follow that with a Factory Reset.. sometime updates can the throw a phones internals off and they need to re righted and running a F.R. may help do that.. but try the system cache clear first..

B33 I took your advice, found how to clear the cache partition via the 3 button hold on startup. Then put the card back in and all is fine now. Thanks for the tip.

Well i thought it worked. problem is still there. I did a full reset. rebuilt everything from scratch. SD card still isn't working. bought a brand new Samsung 64GB pro microSDXC UHS-I card. same problem as with the sandisk 32. my newly updated S5 didn't mount the card automatically like it did before the update, and if I try to mount it I get the message card is either blank or an unrecognized file system.

All this and that, remember the 32GB Sandisk was my cameras file location prior to the update. Same card that was in my S3 for 2 years and then my S5 since I got it. Until the software update. So its not the old card or the new card.

I just read on some forum that the new 4.4.4 update intentionally killed use of the SD card. surely not.

So what do I do to regain use of my SD card(s) ?????

O wow that's not good at all, well if you've had your s5 less than 14 Days you might want to return to your local store have them DOA it and get you another unit hopefully without the new update, I done that back in Feb. with my very first Droid Maxx it had issue with Kit Kat it was under the 14 day return so they handed me a brand new Droid Maxx it had Jelly Bean on it.. it ran fine on that OS for good long run..

Thanks, tried safe mode, no difference. Phone reports the card is blank or an unsupported file sys. It will not format the card. It will not auto recognize a brand new Samsung 64gb card.

I have the same problem with my phone and also with my wife's phone. I bought these phones few days back and I could not use the SD cards from my S3. Those SD cards were from Sandisk and thought the problem will go away by getting Samsung Evo cards. However, I still encounter the same problem. I tried different formats (NTFS, FAT32, exFAT) and no luck. I can read these cards on my PC and laptop so the cards are good. I doubt it is the SD card reader as both phones are not able to read. Any help is greatly appreciated as I might have to return them within the 14-day window.

If you call coumster service and tell them that your sd card is not working. They will send u a free sd card for your phone. They will ask you if you have a Verizon retail store near you. Not a Verizon store that just sells the phone and plains. If you have a Verizon retail store near you. Then you can go there and get new sd cards. If not they u send u new ones in the mail. And it will take 3 to 4 days to come in the mail.

Verizon Wireless Customer Support will send you a SIM card. They will not send you a SD card unless you purchase one.

my S5 is experiencing the same issue- started after downloading a OTA patch from Verizon. the sd card was fine, and I could recover the files via the reader on my pc.

the phone will run my other sd cards, 16gb and lower

i Recently bought another 64 gb card on Black Friday. Again, the phone fails to recognize a mount, noting the card is corrupt or blank.

BOTH of the 64gb cards will mount to my friends Verizon S5. Which oddly enough has the same Verizon OTA patches. The only difference that I can think of is that he never had a card until after he downloaded the OTA patches.

...I've since then given him one of the two cards as an early Christmas gift.

verizon, is there a way to unpatch your updates, and run them again? I'd like to remove my card prior to the update and have another shot at being able to use cards as described in my device..

I had the same issue but fortunately it happened before my phone was 14 days old and they replaced my phone. Works great now.

unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity-- the OTA update came across a month or so after I purchased the phone.

It could be, the phones have low-level hardware differences...

People think these phones are commodity. They have suppliers, hardware that comes in lots, assembled in different facilities. I think you might have a hardware problem.

THERE HAS BEEN A FIX!!

Verizon just released another OTA patch, presumably to fix minor issues before the pending roll out of Android 5.0 'lollipop'.

if you are in my case (cfwegman) and running into this issue on your S5; you may now go to:

settings>system update> download and install update_SM-G900VNI2_NK2

now, you should have no issue having your phone mount the 64gb card.

I just thought I'd share the information- thanks to everyone for their contributions.

I would urge everyone NOT to install the SM-G900VNI2_NK2 update from Verizon, I did so within the last week and that's when my problems started. Since installing that update the S5 phone I've had since May 2014 no longer recognizes my 16GB SD card, it keeps giving me intermittent messages about the card being removed and then reinstalled. Thinking the card may have worked loose I've physically removed it and put it back in again a couple of times but with no real difference. During occasional moments when the card's recognized I try formatting it but nothing changes as a result, the card disappears once again. I cleared the system cache during a reboot but that didn't help either. Earlier this evening I attempted clearing the cache a second time and now my phone's hung with a message "downloading... do not turn off target!!" That was about an hour ago, I think it's bricked, no download could take that much time. I'm going to try a forced restart on my phone because I don't believe it's coming back on it's own.

I've been a Verizon customer for over ten years now but I'm very disappointed with the quality of this latest software update. It may be time to consider switching cellphone service providers. Maybe the quality of service won't be any better but it'll probably cost less.

I've been having this same issue. Everything was working fine until the last update. My wife's phone has been having no issues. Have you head anything about it being fixed? I only ask you before I call Verizon.

This is NOT a new issue. I am on my second SD card (the first one was replaced by Verizon, for free), and now it, too, has failed in precisely the same way.

- It shows as blank, or unsupported

- the S5 asks if you want to format the SD card

- it fails to format

The card itself is fine, and works in other devices.

This is the second time I've lost all of my music and photos, and some apps. Samsung and/or Verizon surely must know of this issue -- do a Google search. We are not alone!
