I know how to do it for a contact but even when I save the email address as a contact, I still get my standard tone.
You can set a different tone for text messages from different contacts on some phones - you would set the tone in the contact info as the "message tone" if that option is available. If you have tried that, with the contact named and just the email address entered in the email field - and you still get the default messaging tone, it may not be possible.
I just set up a test on my phone, with only an email address, then sent a text from that email to my phone - and as you have experienced, I get the default tone, not the one I set for that email as a contact. So it may only be able to "see" text messages if they come from a phone?? I'm not sure why it doesn't work when the text is sent as an email.
Go into the settings for the email account, and look for the notification sound. Do you have the S4 mini or the S4? The mini may not have as many settings or options as the S4.
Not talking about an email app, how about when someone sends a email as a
text (in the messaging window)
