Galaxy S5 Screen Rotation and Gyro stopped working

The screen won't rotate on my Galaxy S5. I checked that the auto rotate is enabled. I also downloaded a level bubble app and the bubble doesn't move. Does anyone know if this is a Samsung issue or an Android issue. I tried switching the auto rotation setting and then changing it back with numerous reboots and battery pulls. Samsung tech support had me clear the cache partition but that didn't work. Now Samsung tech support wants me to factory reset my device which can be a real hassle to re-install and re-setup everything especially if it doesn't solve the problem.

Does anybody know what is going on and how to fix it??

There definitely seems like something is stopping this feature Concrete! I would recommend a hard reset. That would be the best option.

did you try holding a blank spot on homepage. then home screen settings, transition effect. select 3d rotation. then reboot and everything should do what it is supposed to

might be from an app you added....remove the bubble app.

There used to be a dialer code you could use on like the S3 that would let you test or reset colors, camera, gyro, touch. was like #*0735059* but was changed and i don't know if verizon will give you the S5 code for such testing. They really don't want ya in there

I would suggest a Hard Reset as Well but you could try First a couple of other things try pulling the battery and press the power button for 20 sec. hold then re-instal it see if that'll work if it does not then run a system cache it's not quite like a Factory Reset but it might get the phones feature to working again..

You find running a system cache by doing a Google search..

Does the screen rotation work after rebooting the phone? I'm not sure if it is a hardware or software bug, but some Nexus 7 2013 tablets have been having a similar issue. I don't know what is causing their problem.

Hi JoeL,

Even though it is a major hassle, I did a factory reset.

I then installed a level bubble app (Compass Level by LemonClip) from Google Play to see if the Gyro sensors were functioning. They were, and the screen rotated properly in the Gallery app.

I then started the arduous task of re-installing apps and updates and resetting account info, user preferences and other settings in both my device and in my apps (banking, email, weather, ect...). Soon I began getting the error message that "Unfortunately VZWAVSService has Stopped working" upon every reboot. (I don't know if this is related). Also intermittently the screen stopped rotating and the level bubble app was frozen.

A few days ago I was able to restore screen rotation and gyro activity by shutting down my device and then rebooting it. Now, 4 days after a hard factory reset of my device (on 9/6/2014), I am unable to restore screen rotation and gyro activity. I have tried every method suggested by the replies to my original post except another hard reset.

Can you help me figure out what is going on??

What possible app or setting could be hijacking my devices gyro sensor capabilities??

What exactly is VZWAVSService and why should I expect that this error message is not somehow related??

This is very frustrating, your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

The original working code was *#0*# but Verizon locked it out around Oct 2014.

Concrete, my screen has recently stopped rotating as well. I restored function once with a shutdown and restart, but it hasn't responded to that lately either. I don't think I'll be performing any factory resets, since it didn't fix your issue. did you experienced this before or after the lollipop update?

Same problem here, just started recently. "hard reset" is the best option? there has seriously got to be more help than that.

My Samsung Galaxy S5 screen won't rotate. I'm an IT Tech by trade so I did a lot of investigating. This seems to be a known issue with Verizon Galaxy S5's. I've read plenty of quick fix suggestions on numerous sites. Here's what I've done... I did the "figure 8" trick, basically turning the phone over and over in all directions. No luck. I turned the screen rotation button off and on, nothing. I turned the button off, powered down, pulled battery for 30 seconds, powered on, turned screen rotation back on. Nothing. I've wiped the system cache. Nothing. Now here's what's interesting...

I boot the phone in safe mode and still the rotation didn't work. However, when I boot back in to normal mode, all of a sudden it worked! It worked for a good 10 minutes. Then I turned the screen off with the power button (put phone in sleep mode). A few minutes later I got a text so I turned the screen back on, swiped to unlock, and behold, rotation didn't work again. I did the safe mode - to - normal mode cycle again and it worked again, but only until my screened turned off.

I decided it must be a 3rd party app. I decided to back up all my pics and contacts and did a factory reset. My intention was to slowly add my apps back, maybe 1 each hour, until I found the culprit. Screen rotation worked after factory reset, again up until the screen was turned off for more than a few seconds. I installed no 3rd party apps. In fact I didn't even open Google Play Store. The only thing I did was set up the weather/click widget. I powered down and back on (no safe mode involved) and screen rotate worked again, until the phone went to sleep again.

This has to be a software issue either with a pre-installed app or the OS. Can any of this help you to help me figure out what is going on? It's so frustrating that I can't use any rotation based features. Thanks.

Hello - My S5 (G900V) screen has stopped rotating as well. It started a few weeks ago. I too have tried many of the suggestions i.e. off/on; remove battery; wipe cache. I have not preformed a factory reset since it seems like that doesn't really fix the problem and is a PITA. I stopped by a local Verizon store and was told that the problem stems from the OS update. I am now running Lollipoop - G900VVRU2BOE1. The local V-store employee told me that lollipoop was written for the S6 and causes problems on the S5. He said I should go back to Kitkat...which in itself is a PITA as well.

I did an online chat with V customer service (Dawn). She had me try a number of things (such as booting in Safemode), but of course nothing worked. The only thing she could do was offer to swap out my current phone with a replacement one.

However, she said that the problem might also occur on the replacement phone - duh. Also, my one-year warranty had just expired and in order to do the swap, I'd need to purchase an extended policy for $3/month (things that make you go hmmmmm).

At this point I am exasperated with this issue and don't know what to do. It seems like V knows about this problem but doesn't have a fix for it and isn't overly helpful for those phones that are afflicted. Is there a way to directly email someone at V who is a software developer?

I give my friend's grief about their i-phones, but am beginning to wonder if that would be a better choice. Perhaps this is a ploy to get people to upgrade to the S6?

Maybe you should contact Samsung. They manufactured the device. They wrote the software. They would be able to figure out if it was a hardware or software problem.

My S5 started the same crud immediately after receiving the Lollipop update. Verizon responded in it's usual incompetent way. First transferred me to Samsung who told me that problems caused by updates aren't their responsibility but that I could do a factory reset or send the phone to Samsung for repair. I called Verizon back and they hemmed and hawed over whether this is a "known issue" but agreed to warranty the phone with a replacement. I declined their gracious offer and am making do with frequent restarts and/or hard resets which eventually correct the problem for varying temporary periods. Ugghh!

Same problem for me. Tried most recommendations here nothing worked. Then tried taping phone and "figure eight" motion with phone held in every position, sideways screen down screen up. Then it worked. Try it.

I discovered today that my S5 , a year and a day old, is exhibiting the same issue and has been for a few weeks. I spent 3 hours with escalated tech support.

Definitely low level software. IF I pull the battery, then boot into safe mode , all works fine for a while. The tech support guy was aware of the issue on the S6 but not on the S5.

Since the problem will occur if left in safe mode where NO 3rd part apps are running, it is, IMHO, an issue with either the included apps or low level routines that have been recently upgraded.

I suppose one could try shutting down almost all the included routines and see if the gyors and compass will say up, but no my yob..

The tech gave me his phone number and is suppose to message me when Verizon comes back with a response.

My S5 screen rotation just stopped working too. It seems nothing posted here fixes the problem. This is frustrating.

Same thing here. Functionality can be restored (sometimes) by slap to back of housing and then power down restart. BUT THE TEMPORARY FUNCIONALITY WILL NOT LAST. As soon as the phone goes back to sleep mode or inactive mode, screen rotation functionality is lost again.

Has anybody come up with a FIX for this issue yet? I've read through the last 4 pages and done all of those things and rotation is still not a thing my S5 does. So, I don't want another "band-aid for a bullet wound" remedy. I want to know if there is a specific FIX that has been known to work for longer than 7 minutes.

Verizon doesn't know what's going on, it's all the same questions with users. They think it's an isolated problem,obviously they don't read all the posts. They have no idea how to fix it,and probably don't care. Rather have you buy a new phone.

Mine has been not working for 3-4 months now and have read about many users with same issues,probably thousands are not working.

I just started having the same issue with my S5. It started a week ago. It may be coincidental, but it started shortly after installing Google Camera. I have since Uninstalled, but it hasn't fixed the issue. I can restart the phone and it works for a little while before it stops rotating again.

Hey guys, I just joined after googling and finding this thread. I have an S5 running Lollipop, but through AT&T, and I'm having the same issue that started last week. Screen won't rotate, but after rebooting, it will work for a short period and stop working again.

That said, I think it's safe to say this isn't a carrier-related issue, but a Samsung problem so it may do better to try to get answers from them.

Small update with a couple other things I've noticed: my proximity sensor is wonky, and during calls the screen doesn't turn off when I put it up to my ear.

I went into test mode (*#0*#) and the proximity sensor was working, but the gyroscope was not registering and Gyro Selftest fails. After rebooting, everything tests fine for about 2 minutes and then the sensors (accel, gyro, mag) started going nuts, even with the phone sitting flat on the desk. The proximity sensor also stops registering.

Seeing as a reboot temporarily alleviates the problem, I think it's definitely a software issue. And considering mine is ATT and I've read reports of Sprint users having similar problems, it's safe to say that the issue goes back to Samsung.

Not sure if this is the fix but it worked for me. Went into Setup, Applications, Aplication Manager swiped over to Turned Off. I had some apps that I turned off because I don't use them. Found an app called Flipboard turned it on and rebooted. After reboot, my rotation began working and haven't had any issues with rotation not working since i did this. It's been a few days since I did this.

Thay's an interesting thing to find, but I'm having trouble finding my stopped applications, did you typo something, because I can find FlipBoard, under all apps, but it looks like it might be running because the Stop button is not faded out.

However I did open it, and no difference, I also intalled CPU-Z and it showed no input or output from the motion sensor, anyway, I am one of those lucky ones to get a Warranty replacement, and unlucky at the same time because I have to reload everything,

Phone got unusually hot while at the movie theaters a couple of days ago. Battery had gone from 100% to 20% within an hour! "gsiff_daemon" was at the top process in my battery history at about 35% use. Turned off the phone until after the movie.

Back at home I searched around, didn't find any conclusive solution or detailed information on what was happening, so I simply charged back up to 100%, rebooted my phone, and hoped it was a random bug. Went out again later in the afternoon and what do you know, my phone starts getting hot again and the battery is drained... Once again, I see that "gsiff_daemon" has 33% use again.

While doing some more digging around for answers, I realized my gyroscope wasn't working when trying to rotate a game. Checked the *#0*# menu and my gyro self test fails; accelerometer gives no data when using any relevant apps.

I've done all that I've read, from rebooting, safe mode, checking recently installed and gyroscope/accelerometer utilizing apps. Nothing has fixed my gyroscope or accelerometer, and gsiff_daemon continued to show up in my battery usage. Only after renaming /system/bin/gsiff_daemon did the battery drain stop and reset to normal draining levels.

I don't think that factory resetting will fix much, if the gyroscope and accelerometer are truly fried from gsiff_daemon causing my phone to reach uncomfortably high temperatures. I'm left with broken hardware after what appears to be a software bug in gsiff_daemon. From what I've read, it's related to Samsung's apps. One solution I read had said it was S Health but it was already disabled for me when gsiff_daemon showed up.

If anyone has any more experience or insight into this, it would be appreciated. I'd much rather have a functioning gyroscope and accelerometer, and am a little troubled that they may have been fried due to Samsung's own apps or software.

Did you Try Factory Resetting it.. you never know until ya Try I have been through several over the Years I've been on this Forum and they've help me you might give it Go.! but I'd just do the reset I wouldn't rest the internal memory..

I did 2 factor resets last week and it didn't help. The second time I didn't allow anything to be installed after the reset and didn't sign into any of my google or other accounts to keep it as clean as possible and ended up with the same results. It seems to work fine for about 5 minutes after a reboot, and then it stops working. I have yet to see it fail while I'm using the phone. It always fails after I have unlocked it after ~ 5 min or so. Up to that point I can lock and unlock without any issues.

Here's what worked for me. Turn off screen rotate, power down device, power up and turn rotate back on, simple I know but I tried several things for about 5 weeks until I found this.

I just now ununstalled Shazam App, She's rotating again, I was dealing with this issue 4ever, got lucky I guess!
