Galaxy S5 shuts down normally, but the buttons stay lit up and the phone won't turn back on unless the battery is removed first.

My S5 shuts down fine, but the buttons on the bottom stay lit and it intermittently vibrates, like it's not totally off yet. After that, it won't turn back on unless the battery is removed first. What is going on? For as much as we pay for these phones, I shouldn't be having any issues like this at all in the first three months of use. Very frustrating.

vsnizzle, I can understand your frustration. I want to make sure that the S5 is working like it should be. How long have you noticed that this issue has been going on? Is there any kind of physical or liquid damage to the device? Is the device up to date with the latest software? You can always check that by going into: Settings, System Updates, Check for new software update. Please keep us posted.

Thanks for your response, @KevinR_VZW! This issue has only been going on for about two or three days. There has been no physical or liquid damage to the device at all. It's kept in a protective cover, with a screen protector, and usually in a bag in a pocket all day. We have checked for updates, and it tells us that the device is up to date. This is actually my husband's phone - we got identical S5's at the same time and we've compared his settings to mine, and all updates have occured at the same time on both phones but my phone has had no issues at all. Nothing has been done any differently in the last few days to make his phone act like this, so like I said, it's very frustrating for him (and for me!!) Our phones are usually turned off at night and charged every two or three days depending on usage. He's afraid to turn his off now because it's more than slightly annoying to have to remove the battery just to get it to turn back on. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

It sounds like it's NOT shutting down fine... as you said, the lights are still on and it vibrates, as if there's an app or process that isn't allowing it to completely power off. And just FYI - I rarely turn off or power down my phones. I use privacy mode or blocking mode at night so only notifications from immediate family get through, and I charge the phone for a couple of hours in the morning if needed.

Try a system cache clear -

Power down phone

Hold volume up/down & power simultaneously until you see the Boot Mode Selection Menu

Use volume down to navigate to 'Recovery', use volume up to select

Should see screen with triangle and exclamation point next to an Android

Press volume up/down simultaneously to go into system recovery *

Use volume rocker to navigate to 'wipe cache' and use power button to select

Once finished, use volume rocker to navigate to 'reboot system now' and use power button to select

* if doesn't work:

press and hold the volume down and wait for a second or two, then press and hold the volume up and the volume down buttons for 5-6 seconds and then release
