Phone shuts off randomly when doing something with photos. Had recent update for GS4 from NG6 to NK1. Any thoughts?
Hi there, bagcag2! So sorry for the issues with your device. I'd certainly be concerned with random shut offs. You've mentioned that this started after a recent software update. Did you notice any issues with the update (such as loss of service or signal during the process)? Do you use the preloaded Gallery app or do have another installed?DionM_VZW Follow us on Twitter www.twitter.com/vzwsupport
Same thing is happening for me, albeit while I am doing nothing with phone just sitting there. I noticed it started shortly after the update a few days ago. Update went fine, no issues and phone seemed to be functioning properly. Would not even know it shut off until I pick it up to use it and realize it is off. Has already happened 3 times today just in the last few hours. I had it on the desk in front of me while I was working and there was no indication it shut off. While I used to get the random power cycle, this is a bit worse. At least when it power cycled I would know it shut off, and it would restart and turn back on. Can I revert to my previous version?
@a4nst82bn,VZW to the rescue! The issue may be due to conflicts with 3rd party apps or data on your phone. I suggest performing a hard reset http://vz.to/1yCsAKU and make sure not to auto restore the apps. Once the phone has been wiped test it out for a few days without any apps. Then add the apps back one at a time to see if the issue starts again.JohnB_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
I use the preloaded gallery app. I did a hard reset. I ended up replacing the phone. I gave it someone else in my family. Got it fired up about three hours ago. It has shut itself off at least six times. I shall take the advice of giving it another hard reset and not load any apps to see what it does. If it continues, any other suggestions.
@bagcag2,The hard reset should help with that issue. Keep us posted if you need further assistance. JohnB_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
Interestingly, after updating a few apps, the random shut off stopped. These are the apps that I updated - Chromecast, Hangouts, Youtube, Google Play Music, Google Keyboard, Skype, TripAdvisor, and Shazam. It is a bit of a pain to have to hard reset and then individually load each app. I understand the necessity, and am also appreciative that my issue stopped before I had to. Hopefully this information will help someone else, if it happens to them. They can try updating their apps and see if it also stops for them. Thanks for the help JohnB!
Here we go again. Another system update to fix the last fiasco with NG6 now has problems--the same ones as NG6. I've had it with Samsung. Droid Turbo, here I come.
I got a new device. Tired of GS4 having temper tantrums.
I'm convinced the real problem is all the custom coding that goes in to the Android OS.
First by Samsung, who heavily modifies Android and bakes in all manner of so-called "enhanced" features which no one uses, and then bakes in a substantial amount of crapware. This puts a substantial burden on the phone hardware and the OS.
Then Verizon takes the phone and bakes in their own concoction of various crapware.
Verizon makes sure the phone performs reasonably well out of the box, but when you begin adding your own desired apps, you have the perfect storm for software conflict.
Hence, the solution to any performance issue is to do a hard reset and revert the phone to it's out-of-the-box configuration.
The irony is that if a phone manufacturer would offer a straight vanilla Android phone without charging the user a huge surcharge, they would pretty much rule the Android world.
Google does and so does Motorola. Moto G for a low end version of vanilla Android and the Nexus 6 for premium/flagship device with vanilla Android. Clean, unobtrusive Android out of the box.
