I have copied to sim and what I thought was up loaded to verizon in backup. how do I get a copy or download to my pc?

Does your phone have an SD card and slot? If so, you can backup your contacts to the SD just like you did to your SIM. If you do that, you can access the SD card on a card reader on PC or by using a usb to phone cable.
