Updates are supposed to improve your phone and we're sorry to hear this hasn't been the case so far. There is not a way to revert back to a previous software version, but we're confident we can help get things cooled down and running smoothly for you. Lets try a few things.

First, please go ahead and clear the RAM by pressing the multi-window soft key, then press "Close All." Please also try wiping the cache partition by following these steps:

1. Ensure the device is powered off.

2. Press and hold the Volume Up button (located on the left edge near the top) and the Home button (located at the bottom in the middle).

3. While continuing to hold the Home and Volume Up buttons, press and hold the Power button (located on the right edge) until "RECOVERY BOOTING" appears in the upper left then release all buttons.

4. Select wipe cache partition

5. Select reboot system now.

Thanks for the reply Sarah. I performed the tasks that you outline, but the WiFi is still constantly dropping and the battery is dropping quickly as well. Likely related.

I have the same problem and I've done the "wipe cache partition" also. I am very hesitant to do a factory restore - I will have to reload lot of settings and things. My phone was sluggish to begin with even after a few factory resets, but after Lollipop 5.0 it's down right unusable. Isn't there any other way?

Agreed with this guy the rush launch of Lollipop has put a sour taste in my mouth. The phone sucks now. sluggish constantly in cool down mode, signal stregth degraded, glinching in basic phone calling and text messages. Please be warned do not update your phone. And does anyone have the link or insturctions on how to get back to Kit Kat so I can use my phone again?

Likely no one is going to provide you a means to go back to KK.

If you've determined a low-level cache clear doesn't save the day, I would back up my personal content and do an FDR if I were in your shoes.

Updates don't necessarily work without glitches on everyone's devices. There's too much configuration variance, and the design of the system doesn't make it bulletproof.

Now if you do the FDR and it still acts crazy, well then you might chalk it up to poor regression testing.

My S5 has been running hot since the Lollipop update, too. The ONLY other problem I have is the battery life has gotten atrocious since the update, too. I have already FDR, disabled apps, and nothing helps on either count. I don't want to turn off Smart Network Switch, since I go from home to work, and don't want to have to reconnect to 4G or Wi-fi every time.

If you've already done an FDR...

Go into WiFi and Advanced Settings and see if your phone continues to hunt for a stronger WiFi access point.

Also, go into Mobile Data, select Menu, and turn on WiFi. In this way you'll be able to see what programs are using either the Cellular or WiFi radios.

My S5 also runs a bit hot and my battery drains very quickly. I've tried the wipe cache partition "fix" and changing the wifi settings. Nothing seems to be helping. Do I really have to spend the better part of the day reinstalling/reconfiguring all of my apps? That's just ridiculous! My phone work fine before I "upgraded".

Sorry to see the trouble you have had with battery life and the previous suggested fixes did not do the trick. Let's see if we can get that working for you! When did the trouble start? Was this just after the OS update? If so, when was the update completed? Specifically how long is the charge lasting from full charge?

The trouble started right after I applied the lollipop update, just like everyone else here. I updated on 2/3, in the evening. I used to be able to unplug my phone in the morning, go to work, and plug it in before bed. I would still have between 30% and 50% when I plugged it in. Today, I was down to 30% by 1:30pm. No change is usage. If anything, I'm using it less because of the issue.

I have the exact same problem . Runs hot and battery dies very fast. It can't make the day. Only thing that changed was I updated it to lollipop. I have since wiped back to factory. This fixed the lag that started with the upgrade but not the battery life.

Thank you for sharing the details! After a OS upgrade, ceratin parts of the memory system may be optimized. The application memory areas may have to be optimized. This can take time and cause the device to temporarily use more battery while the optimization is in progress. This should normalize within 2-3 days. Downloaded applications may not be optimized for the new OS version which may result in higher than normal battery drain until the application itself is updated or removed.

I do recommend checking the battery usage for which application is using the most battery. http://vz.to/1BZ8FVI You can check these applications for updates or remove them and re-test your battery usage.

My S5 started doing this as soon as I updated, hot and losing battery life. I went into the apps that were running and if I didn't know what the app was or if I would never use it to begin with I shut it off. That helped a little but I wasn't happy with it so I backed up the phone to cloud and also to my pc and did a factory reset. It took a couple of days but as of today, 2/14/2015, I've had my phone on since 7 a.m.and it's now 3:30 p.m. and the phone is at 92%..exactly where it would have been before the update. What ever was turned on by the update the hard reset turned off. You still end up with the update but at least a lot of the bloatware is shut down.

Try this as an emergency patch, go to settings and locate your camera app and Shut the app down and stop it from running. Over the next 24 hours your battery should settle down. please keep me posted, thank you.

The S5 is running hot because it is scanning for wifi then connecting and disconnecting every 5 seconds. All you need to do is disable your smart network switch under wifi, advanced settings. This will save your battery. Also, turn off the phone when you charge it and maintain the charge between 50 and 80 percent. That will prolong battery life. See battery university.com. Jamzm, that was one of the first things I checked and mine wasn't even checked. I also will not be charging my phone every hour to keep it between those percents. That doesn't fix the problem, it babies it. I want to be able to use the phone.

I've done all of the above and my phone still lags and runs hot. I just unchecked Google scanning in wifi. I'll see if that helps. Any other suggestions?

I shut down the camera app (why we need one is beyond me). The phone has been on since 8:30 am and now it's almost 8 pm. The battery is currently at 90%. I think it was a combination of doing a reset and shutting the camera app off. I can breath easier.....that is until the next update.

The camera app is a major S5/5.0 problem
but one that has a work-around...shut it down, their are other that myself and others on the forum are working on. What we need now is a patch/update release ASAP. Glad I could help you. :smileyhappy:

Mine ran hot I sent the phone in to Samsung and they fix it. I was out a phone for a week or so. If you do that make sure you have a back up. You'll lose everything on the phone.

Hello again. I contacted Verizon last night to inform them about what i found with the wifi. They connected me to a tech who guided me through clearing an app cache and a browser cache. No specific app or browser. I just picked one of each. Anyway, i cleared them and restarted the S5. After then reenabling the wifi, it came up and connected and stayed connected. No scanning and no frequent connects/disconnects. I let the tech know that i was skeptical of this fix. And when i'm nowhere near a wifi signal, it still scans frequently. I don't know how the battery will tolerate this. And i don't want to have to do this regularly. I'm getting info from some posts that Samsung and Android 5 are fine and that it is the various carrier add-ons causing these issues. Does anyone have any input on that? Have a good day.

I had the s3, the s4, and now the s5. I never had problems with the 3. Eventually I couldn't even make calls on the s4. Now with the s5, I've done all the recommended "fixes" and the phone is still almost unusable. I'm seriously considering switching back to the iPhone I'm so sick of this. We need a real fix (not a workaround) immediately.

Yay! I shut down the camera app on my phone has been holding battery life. 3:10 in the afternoon and I'm at 72%!
