Very curious to hear from anyone that experiences problems with this update and if or how they were able to fix them?
Thanks!
Well I just checked for updates on my S4, and it said there were 2 updates, the first was to prepare for 5.0.1, and the second was the 5.0.1 update. The first update downloaded and installed fine. When I went to download and install the second update, it downloads without error, and restarts itself and the green android pops up and acts like its installing the update, a few seconds later the green android pops up with a red triangle and says error. Then it restarts and when it does I get a script saying the update was unsuccessful. Then I go back to software update in settings and it says "update failed, 402". I wish I knew how to fix this, I would really like to have it updated before tomorrow. I even tried Kies and it says there is no update for this phone. I tried Verizon upgrade assistant, and it says "this devices current firmware is not available for a software upgrade". Is there any insight for why this could be happening? Thanks
Did you try a hard reset? I would also take out the SD card before the factory reset just as a precaution and I wouldn't re-install the SD card until update is complete.
Did you reboot after the 1st update?
Minor glitch. Camera shortcut was checked on in settings to appear on lock screen but was not showing on lock screen. Simply removing the check mark and checking it back on made it reappear. Settings-->My Device-->Lock Screen--> Camera Shortcut.
TThe main problem I have seen is on my G3. Ever since the update my wifi has been running like dial up! my device worked excellent up until I did the update. Everything works ok as long as your on the data. Seems kinda like it might have been done on purpose to get people to use more data. J/s
My upgrade appeared to go smoothly, but ....
I now cannot reach my POP3 email server using Maildroid. The prevoius messages in Maildroid are still there, but when I try to connect, all I get is "Connecting in <> Try now" with <> counting down from 1m, then 2m, now 5m.
Also when I press the menu spot on the phone, I get the editing layout for home screen with wallpapers, widgets, and home screen settings buttons on the bottom.
Overall very frustrating. How do I revert?
Having the same problem. I tried a factory reset to no avail. Any suggestions out there other than the standard Tier 1 responses?
I had no issues on any of my devices that updated to 5.0.2
Has anyone noticed if "Part 1" of the update changes the version of the OS (i.e. - KitKat 4.4.3 or 4.4.4)?
It does not. I have had troubles installing the second patch but after the first the system is still listed as 4.4.2 with baseband FNK4.
Thanks - Just curious!
Because it seemed that past upgraders were seeing issues related to 3rd party apps not working properly, amongst other issues, the first thing that I did before starting the upgrade process was to uninstall all 3rd party apps, so that the device would be as close to a clean KitKat setup as possible.
I updated last night - it only took 20 minutes (apart from the app uninstalls) and have not had any problems. Performance is good and no battery life issues so far. I've been reinstalling apps one at a time, so that I can isolate any app-specific issues. Again, nothing to report there.
So to recap, here's how I upgraded my S4:
Hope this helps!
Try updating Google Android WebView app, I'm experimenting with that now and it seems to be working fine, no more crashing apps!
Well, I backed up everything, did a hard reset, and when I go to install the second half of the update, it still does the same thing...What should I do now?
Just FYI - "Webview" has been the cause of some games from Goggle Play to crash. At the moment the only fix to to go into Application Manager > Webview and "Uninstall Updates". The makers of the games acknowledge the problem and are working on a fix.
I haven't done the Lollipop update as of yet so I'm just passing information along!
Since the update to 5.01 my battery life has been terrible. I even did a factory reset and started fresh installing apps. My battery went from fully charged to dead within 2 hours much of which was on standby. This has happened consistently since I received the update.
@pjwalter: Go into Settings > More > Battery. That will show you the apps/components that are consuming the most battery power. If the worst offender is a 3rd party app, uninstall it. Something is making a lot of data requests on your phone, I'm guessing.
Another suggestion - I use Juice Defender Plus, which I've had on my Android phones for a few years now. The most important thing it does is to shut off your data connection when the phone is locked, and only wake it up to do data syncs at predetermined intervals (mine is set to 30 minutes). An app like that may help you, if you can't determine the cause of your battery drain otherwise.
I have been posting here for months about the problems Lollipop caused with my Nexus 6 tablet. It made the tablet virtually useless. I could get no satisaction from either Asus or Google. I also referenced the S5 community where I found many, many posts about what Lollipop did to user's phones. I am still using Kit Kat 4.4.2. Since last Fall, I have been postponing the NG6 and NK1 updates after reading all the issues these updates caused.
Users shouldn't have to jump through all theses hoops to recover from a system update. Samsung and VZW should have done more research before pushing Lollipop.
Look at the attached screenshot. Clearly there is something going wrong that the battery is around 65% and then in a matter of moments it drops down to zero.
That does look like a glitch. Has it done this more than once or twice?
My S4 has worked flawlessly, perfectly for over a year, until yesterday when I got the "update". Now it's practically useless. No audio at all. Phone doesn't work, it rings in and shows dialing on outgoing but it never connects, and with no audio it wouldn't matter. Camera doesn't work, get a "Camera app failed" message. It lags, won't recognize input, crashes/reboots at random, gives "unfortunately, system UI has failed" message, offers erratic static scratching from speakers on no input at all. I have everything turned off, no motion sensor, face sensor, etc, haven't even tried to connect to wifi. 24 hours of troubleshooting a device that had been working perfectly, and when I call or chat online with customer support I get offers to replace the phone with a similar product. So I'm supposed to trust the replacement rebuilt phone you're sending me will run fine using the same software that just bricked the phone I had been in love with all this time? Then, in the mother of all ironies, I get a phone call that I cannot of course answer, google tells me its a verizon customer satisfaction survey number. Then they call back, and leave a voicemail, which I of course cannot answer. The solution of course is to do a complete factory reset. Tell you what Verizon, next time the "Check engine light" comes on your car, contact your auto company, download all the software that runs your car and then tell me what you think my customer experience has been like. Whoever came up with this plan needs to find himself or herself or themselves shoving sardines in a can in a drafty fish packing plant on a remote Alaskan island instead of running a modern communications enterprise.
I flashed the stock 4.4.2 firmware back to my device using Odin and then retried updating it and it updated flawlessly!! I'm loving the new layout and design and colors. It was a much needed update for the s4 in my opinion and is running pretty flawlessly for me. But I've got a 7800 mah anker battery, so I'll report back later after a full cycle with the new update I'm sitting at 66% right now and it does seem like it may be draining a little faster but it isn't too bad
Man, that's crazy. Verizon should be able to answer why some lucky people have no issues at all with the upgrade, while other people wind up with bricks. You have to assume the hardware is the same for everyone, so that means there's a software issue. Verizon should publish a list of known steps that give customers the best chance of a successful upgrade.
Like I said, I started with as close to a default KitKat setup as I could get before upgrading, and it went perfectly for me. Your mileage may vary, of course.
So I guess the takeaway from this is - if you don't have any issues with your KitKat installation, and you don't care about the new Lollipop features, then don't upgrade. You can dismiss that popup and you won't see it again.
I posted a similar complaint on FB, and I'm getting a number of replies of similar failures, dissatisfaction, etc, on the S4 or S5. Honestly, I would terminate the employment of every idiot who approved this fiasco, from the hacks on development and testing team to the clowns on the business committee who decided it wouldn't matter how many customers were stuck on contracts with useless devices.
Yeah I definitely agree that it should have been a much smoother update...I'm just glad I finally got it updated! I wonder if it had anything to do with my phone being a replacement? Like what if the original owner rooted it or something and it wasn't completely set back to stock before it was sent to me? Idk, just thinking out loud. I guess it could be any number of unknown things haha, good luck to anyone else having problems!
I'm curious as to what "Kernel version" is on peoples phone that had the upgrade fail.
I have not performed the update and my "Kernel version" is "dpi@SWDD6215 #1 > Tue Nov 4 23:03:49 KST 2014"
Some people seem to have a "Kernel version" that from Sept 2014.
Thanks
Mine has 3 issues on the galaxy note 3
This all happened right after the update.
1- Battery drains faster
2- I only can talk to someone via speaker phone (On) or else they cant hear me at all.
3- I can no long talk text.
This is a terrible update I was told that by the tech support as well.
He mentioned that I wait on patches to update or get another cell phone.
Why would I want a refurbished cell phone after all Im still paying for this new one.
Meanwhile I believe I deserve a cut in my bill for their negligence for not testing this out properly.
Wasting my time!
God wish Id done that!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate this upgrade. I have three issues.
Cant talk unless its speaker phone. Faster Drained battery. No more talk text.
They cant even fix this!
I had the same kernel version as you August and it gave a good bit of problems on the actual install... But as far as how its running now, it definitely seems to perform better! Usually around 8 or 9 pm my battery would be around 50 to 60 percent. With the update, my phone is on 77 percent at midnight! I took my phone off charge about the same time each time, around 6 or 7 am...And I've got the same exact apps that I did before the update, and everything is the same as far as settings go...So, for me at least, its much better! I absolutely love the update, maybe thats just me. The only noticeable problem I've seen, is that when I view my friends stories on Snapchat, the videos kind of freeze every now and then, but it doesn't really bother me. Other than that, every thing else is flawless.
The only problem I've had so far with the update on my Note 3 is with calls only working when I use speakerphone or with my car connected to Bluetooth. The calls connect fine and I can hear the other person but the mic seems to be muted when I'm not using speakerphone or Bluetooth. I've tried wiping the cache partition and a factory data reset but neither helped with the call problem. Anyone have any luck finding a fix???
This update has a few issues for me. I use Nova Launcher. Touchwiz will randomly take over from Nova as the launcher, though Nova sometimes will reassert itself for a while. Also the Nova launcher appears in the task manger as a killable app - somewhere it should NEVER show up. Re-installing Nova does not help. As a note, if I set the Google Now launcher as the default, it gets the same treatment. This issue occurs on three phones so far.
I have some issues with Trusted Locations as well. Sometimes when I am Home, the PIN screen will still come up when I unlock my screen even though it should not. This could just be an issue with this update being an comparably old version of Lollipop.
I did a full factory restore then I did the upgrade to 5.0.1 then I did another restore. With that being said I have had 1 issue and 1 annoyance.
The issue: No Data over wifi or 4g. This has happened twice where I had to reboot the phone to fix the issue.
Annoyance: Bluetooth now gives the "High Volume Warning" message when listening to audio at max volume. It used to not do this before in kitkat 4.4.2
Other than those 2 things seem to be going well. My Battery drain bug from kitkat seems to be gone (Where Android OS would use up 40% of my battery and my phone would get hot)
Just to check back in, my battery life has tremendously improved. keep in mind I'm using a 7800mah extended battery. When I was running 4.4.2 my phone would last about 2 whole days. Now its been almost 3 days, and I'm still sitting at 28% and the phone tells me I have about 22 hours left on battery. So that will be about 3 and a half days of phone usage. So its working really well for me still! I haven't found any more bugs either, which is great!
Lost S-Voice. Will not say who has text or called. This is in Hands free mode.
No S-voice, I think that was a very useful part of the phone and now will not tell me who has texted while I am driving. Either need a patch or give me another phone since I can't go back to 4.4.2... Great way to ruin a good phone verizon.
Since updating my Samsung Galaxy S4 to lollipop 5.0.1 I am not able to send SMS messages, or text with MMS messages. The phone receives texts and I can make calls and surf the network just fine. The phone is using a T-Mobile Sim. I can send text if I am not on the 4g LTE. Unfortunately I cannot disable LTE in the settings. I contacted Samsung and T-Mobile and no solutions provided work. I dunno what else to do at this point.
