As opposed to a hard reset, if you have a gmail account on the device you can go to the android device manager and force a passcode change. Here's the link https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager. I hope this helps you out
Monica78B, Oh no! I can understand wanting to set a passcode, so your kids don't get into your phone. If you still are not able to get into your phone you are going to have to do a "alternative reset" See here: http://vz.to/1yz5DGg . Just be mindful all the information will be gone and will start as a brand new phone. If you have a memory card on your phone, your pictures will be saved.
