I assembled this thread for contributing factual, and/or helpful info about this new phone; now that we have an official name for this exciting new Android 2.x device from Motorola. If you have any pertinent info about the Droid, you may post it to this thread. Please list any questions or other comments in a separate thread.
Thank You
Not sure if this was on another thread or not, but saw this on Twitter earlier today.

Here's a cleaner link: http://phones.verizonwireless.com/motorola/droid/
Guess I should have clicked on the 1st link in this thread. Just saw the add on TV while watching The Simpsons Halloween special.
Already a thread about all this which you knew already knew because you post in it.

Haven't posted there, but thanks for the cross-link. Didn't realize that the Hero or Tao would be the droid. Which one is it?
lowagriz that was to the creator of the thread not you, sorry.
The HTC Hero is a different device than the Motorola Droid. All the details are in my thread. But since the HTC Hero is out for Sprint you can just go on the Sprint site and have a looksies or try it out in the Sprint store. It will be the same thing but ours looks different.
Here are pictures of the new droid on Boy Genius Report:

I just found this a minute ago. Seems we have a date change. http://phandroid.com/2009/10/20/motorola-droid-announcement-date-changed-oct-28th/
Here is a very good post on what the phone is capable of. This phone will not be dumb ed down, crippled, or bloated with junk ware that VZW is notorious for. The phone is rumored to have more power that a PSP, and have an independent GPU.
Rumored release date by reliable source October 30 2009

alright figured the coundown out. it is derived from the clock on your computer. so if you change your computer to October 28, and go on droiddoes.com, the coundown clock will show all the same digit and will no longer count down. expect an anouncement or release on the 28th.

Nice! That's pretty cool.
just saw new droid commericial which ended with a big NOVEMBER at the end of the ad
In a comments thread on one of the boy genius report articles talking about the droid, one of the posters said that this phone will require a 29.99 extra data plan even if your plan includes unlimited data.
can anyone confirm or deny this (I really hope it isn't true)?

It's normal for Verizon to release phones online/via telephone first, then in stores a week or 2 later.
The countdown is probably for the online release, and November is the in-store release...
Anyone know if the Droid is going to have GSM capabilities? Verizon/Google/Motorola needs to know that you can't have a new flagship Android phone thats not global capable. Besides, you're really NOT competing with the iphone if your phone can't work overseas.
I've seen reports that Motorola has passed a GSM version of the Droid through the FCC. According to the website, it DOESN'T support ATT's 3G or T-Mobile's 3G frequencies. Which means its either an exclusive to European GSM customers OR it will be a world phone.

Motorola Droid makes appearance on Motorola’s site
No GSM support
Looks like we'll have to wait for a true iphone killer.
It comes with a 16Gig Micro SD card. That is just sick. I am a little disappointed that they underclocked the processor to 550 instead of 600 also the keypad is the worst of all the ones I have seen. I may wait for the calgary next year though I figure it will have an even slower processor it looks like the keypad at least is nicer and I don't need a 5mp camera on my phone. I am officially keeping my eyes on the HTC but touch only would drive me insane I think.

OK...so I went to my local store in NJ tonight and talked to one of the reps who I've spoken with in the past. This guy is really into new phones and staying informed....probably not as much as some of us (we are fanatical), but he's definitely one of the most informed/knowledgeable customer reps you can expect to meet at a Vzw store.
So I immediately asked about the Droid...he said didn't have any working models that they were allowed to show. He hesitated...I knew it was a recorded response because we were standing by the door. I had reminded him that I was in a few weeks ago and we were talking about the TP2. I doubt he remembered, but this must have tipped him that I wasn't the average shopper, so he immediately offered to show me the "non-working" Droid. i said sure.... he brought over the Droid and the Eris..neither of which were working.
We first talked about the Eris...at first glance, it's a really pretty phone. The screen looks like it's going to be really nice....it's sleek/sexy and light. It's got a trackball on the bottom which we both agreed was kind of silly since it's a touchscreen phone...and then we moved on to the good stuff (I have no interest in the Eris...it's lacking in the hardware department).
The Droid looks soooo much better in person than it does in pictures. It's a really nice looking phone. It's barely thicker than my Q9m, it feels really solid..like it can take some abuse...I like that. The keyboard on this nonworking test model felt really stiff...I asked him if that was how they all were....he said no...definitely not... He was very excited about the Droid. I asked him if he ever got the TP2...he was excited about that one too a few months ago.... he said once he started hearing about the Droid he decided to wait. I asked him about the O2...he didn't seem too impressed with it, and didn't really know much about when it's going to be released..only that they keep pushing it back. Later in the convo, he mentioned if someone really wanted Winmo, the O2 would be for them...
Anyway, after I started asking questions about the Droid, he told me to meet him in the back of the store near the billing area, and he brought out the real Droid...activated/working etc.... It's really fast...the screen is great, it's responsive, I really liked it.
The keyboard felt good to me...I could totally see myself being happy with it. I guess if I had to compare with my Moto Q...the Q keyboard is a little better, but not by much. If I was to give my Q a 9 or 10 for keyboard, the Droid would be a 7. The sliding mechanism is solid too. I told him I heard the camera is lacking and he agreed. He said he was not impressed with it...I mentioned BGR said it might just be software, and he said it's very possible. We took some test pics and they did take a long time to snap and be ready for the next pic....It's probably the phone's biggest drawback.
I asked him about the 3rd Android phone. He didn't tell me much, I just asked him if it would be out within the next month or 2...he said yes...I asked if it would be on par with the Droid, and he said it was going to be better...with a very confident grin...
That's about it...I think the crappy camera on the Droid is really an issue for me. I'm not expecting it to be as good as my Canon digital, but it really was lacking....
There is always a better phone coming. You have to jump in sometime and the Droid seems to meet my needs so I'm jumping in now. At least it'll be cooler than my colleague's HTC Touch Pro 2 - he's had the king of the office cellphones for a couple of weeks. Time to unseat him.
AT&T has horrible coverage in Nebraska. We have no iPhones in the company.
There may be a Snapdragon based phone released on black friday. According to sources it depends on whether it is done before or after the O2. The one that is ready first will be part of a BF push and the one that isn't will be part of a mid December push. I am really hoping the Calgary comes out around BF because it has the same processor as the Eris and a keypad and the screen is in between the Eris and the Droid and it doesn't waste a lot of money on a camera that appears to at least for now be worthless. I am hoping 2 things for Black Friday. First I am hoping that with the introduction of the Snapdragon phone there will be a big sale on Droids so I can pick up 2 of them as a Bogo. If that doesn't happen I am hoping for the Calgary to come out at $99 or lower so I can get a set of those. I need to get 2 awesome smart phones fairly inexpensively and we have both played with Heros and found the touch keypad to be about as usefull as an iPhone. For those wondering we have both found iPhones to be about as useful as my original PDA from the 90's. Yeah it is that uhhhh awesome. Seriously though I got the feeling that if Verizon got the iPhone they wouldn't get Android and I would be severly disappointed since I was not impressed with the iPhone.
