I am experiencing a number of issues when using DLNA on the Droid X:
When using the Droid X as a DLNA "client" (attempting to playback media on the Droid X which is stored on another device which is acting as the DLNA "server" :
SETUP and EXAMPLE:
Running Windows Media Player 12 on a Windows 7 Ultimate PC. This is acting as DLNA "server".
Connecting over local WiFi Network (both the Windows PC and the Droid X are connected to the same local network).
Router is a NetgearWireless RangeMax -- "G +". UNPNP is enabled on the router.
Media Sharing is ENABLED on the Windows 7 PC.
Start DLNA app on Droid X.
Press "Play Media"
My Windows PC shows up as an available media server in the list as : Computer Name: Username: (i.e., "JohnDoe-PC:JohnDoe:"
Click on the Windows PC media server name
Get Listing of files: "Browse for a file to play from"
Shows my available media : Music; Pictures;Playlists;Videos
Click on Videos
Get listing of various Video files and : "Browse for a file to play from"
Click on Folders
Click on Videos
Click on the name of a video file which shows up in the list.
Goes to screen: Choose a device to use for playback
Choose "Play on phone"
Receive error message "The media file can not be played"
This happens regardless of the (a) format of the video file (i.e., happens with *.wmv; *.mp4; *.avi; etc....etc...) (b) happens regardless of the size of the video file (c) happens regardless of the bit rate of the video file
Playback never begins.
Sometimes the error message reads: " Sorry, an internal error happened. The media file can not be streaming played."
I AM able to play audio files (*.mp3) without problem.
I AM able to view pictures.
I have also tried using TVersity running on the Windows PC as a media server.
Similar results -- HOWEVER, with TVersity I was able to actually start video playback on one or two random video files -- BUT they played back in a totally erratic way (extremely slowly, lots of "sttutering", dropouts, etc.)
I have tried all available settings on TVersity to no avail.
I have also played with all available router settings (i.e., turned off UNPNP; tried port forwarding as per Microsoft suggestions, etc.) -- all to no avail.
My WiFi connection is good -- and the speed should be sufficient for local video streaming ( I am able to stream video to another Windows PC on the network without problem)
(1) Is this a defec/bugt in the Droid X DLNA app ??
(2) Is it a lack of codec support on the Droid X and/or does it require transcoding on the media server (and if so, of what type ?)
(3) Is there a limit on the bit rate of video files that can be streamed to the Droid X ??
(4) Are there other specific settings that need to be set on the media server or media server's PC ??
(5) Is there a specific media server application that WILL work that can run on Windows 7 ?
(6) Is this a "known" issue ? And, if so, will a fix be issued (and when) ??
Does anyone else have similar issues ?
Does anyone else have any ideas/solutions ?
Can Verizon and Motorola be notified of this issue ??
Thanks for any feedback/help/ideas .....
