When trying to update S4 SW from 4.2.2 to 4.4 I click SW update and am told status was last checked over 2 years ago and when I check now I'm told SW update is temporarily unavailable. This happens every time.

Ideas?

Try the Verizon Software Update Assistant or Samsung Kies with the phone attached to USB on PC.

Try the Verizon Software Update Assistant or Samsung Kies with the phone attached to USB on PC.

Kies worked perfectly albeit I had to restore factory settings because a phone error message was appearing perpetually. Thanks!
