Incompatible charger for S5

So within the last month or so, my Galaxy S5 has started rejecting chargers. At first it was a Kindle Fire charger. Then it was the original Samsung charger. And now it is an older Verizon USB connection to the computer. It's not all of the time, and it's not always immediate. It may charge for a few percent, but then it will shut off, stating that I'm using an incompatible charger. As mentioned, it's not a specific charger, nor is it just generic or off-brand chargers. It's not gotten wet or experienced major damage or anything. The inconsistency with this is what makes it annoying. I've turned it on and off, taken the battery out, and like I said, it works for a while. Sometimes it fully charges, other times it doesn't. What's going on?

As far as I know nothing new was installed. I don't know about updates, since those are automatic. The error message does not appear when certain applications are running. I usually clear everything out of my task manager after I am done using it.

usb charging is worthless.

if you're not using the double connector charger packed with the s5, it's probably why you're having charging problems.

I'll agree Bear.. we've been telling this to ones for Quite a while I know I have using the Box charger is always the Best and safest way to charge a phone..

This has recently happened to me as well, right after my phone allowed the update. There is a similar thread of this happening to customers with the S4 shortly after the last update in 2014. Seems to be a common theme. Many commented that it can be remedied by replacing the usb charging port on your own, if your into that sort of thing.

I have hard reset, soft reset, started in safe mode, tried original chargers, older chargers, car chargers... Might be having some luck with it plugged into the computer right now, but it is only reaching 1% after quite some time.

I love my S5, but this seems to happen with Samsung stuff entirely too often. And it is rather interesting that it happens to most shortly after a new update?

I am having the same issues!!! It is so frustrating since I haven't even had this phone (now paperweight) a full year! I do not have my original charger because it broke and I bought a replacement charger at Verizon and was not told that I should have received a replacement Samsung charger because it was still under warranty. Now I am stuck with this non working incompatible charger. I am going to try using a Samsung charger again to see if there is any improvement.

At least I know I am not the only one but still that shows that the equipment is not really quality. I can't upgrade (for a reduced rate) and if I file insurance claim I will have to pay around $100 for a refurbished phone that is being sold on the site for 50 bucks even though I have paid 8 dollar insurance for nearly a year. What a [removal required by the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service] of a deal! NOT!

Getting a full charge is important, Christa61183. Let's get to the bottom of it. Have there been any changes to the device, such as software update or new app added around the time this started? Are you using the original charger, or an after-market one?

My S5 started rejecting the original charger and cable a day or so ago. Phone was not dropped or had any water damage to it. I have been using the original charger and cable that came with my phone. I use it in a wall outlet. There is nothing wrong with the cable or charger. I keep getting the error message that the cable is not compatible with my phone, and will not charge. Or I get that it is slow charging and use cable cam with phone... Which I am. I have tried other Samsung chargers and I keep getting the incompatible error message.

No new apps or downloads, and this was happening before the most recent update.

Is there a way to fix this issue?

I can see where not being to get your phone to "see" the charger would be a concern. It's definiltey important to be able to charge your phone! Let's find out more. Is the connection port lose or seem to wiggle at all? Was there anything added to the phone within the last day or so (maybe a new app)? We are here to help in any way that we can, please share more details.

As I mentioned earlier, nothing new was added or downloaded, and the charger and cable are fine and fit tight.

I am glad to know I am not the only one experiencing this issue. This has been occurring for the past month with my Samsung 5 phone. The same issue happened when I had a Samsung 3. I was advised by a sales rep at Verizon Wireless that the charging port had gone bad and I would require a new phone, which is why I now have a Samsung 5. At the time of the charging issue with the Samsung 3, the phone was 2 years and 1 month old, conveniently past the warranty so that nothing could be done about the charging port and I was forced to get a new phone. Now that this situation has been occurring with my Samsung 5, which is 1 year and 14 days old, I have been told by several sales reps that it is absolutely NOT the charging port, but that the charger has gone bad. First, the car charger ceased to charge the phone. I was told that a new charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter outlet would fix the problem. It did not. Luckily, I had the forethought to try this before I left the Verizon store. I was then told to purchase a new cable to plug into the lighter outlet portion of the charger, which worked for a short time. My original charger that came with the phone, for the home, causes my phone to show a message that the phone is not compatible with this charger and that if I would like to charge faster, I should try using the one that came with the phone..even though it IS the charger that came with the phone. I then had to purchase ANOTHER charger for the home (mind you these charges are $25 each) and now this charger worked for two hours total and now ceases to charge the phone after about 10-15 seconds, and I receive the incompatible charge error message continuously. And before Verizon responds to this comment (if they even acknowledge it), I will make it clear that the phone charger is not damaged, nor is the charging port, it has been reset multiple times, and the phone has NOT been: dropped in 6ft of water, had a drop of water within 50 feet of it, dropped from a mountain top or 1 inch from the ground, nor has it had any dust, dirt, grease, oil, or food spilled on or near it. And to cover all bases, it has not been in a zombie apocalypse. With that out of the way, I hope that I can get some resolution to what the cause of this issue is, as I will not spend another $25 or even .$.01 on another charger that will just result in the same inability to charge my phone. Some of us need to have a phone in case of emergency and it's unfortunate that we are all at the mercy of phone carriers who make it impossible to have a phone last over 1 year. And because it has only been 1 year and 14 days, I am not where near eligible to upgrade as I have not paid off at least 75% of the astronomical cost of the cell phone.

I got misleading message for many, many weeks, intermittently, when I first got my S5. The spurious messages always went away when I took off the back cover of the phone and charged it like that. The message came back again recently. Same solution: take the back off of the phone to charge it. My suspicion is that the phone/battery flex relative to each other and that causes the symptoms.

This sounds like my experience. Out of the blue - no drop, no water exposure - the phone comes up with an
"unable to charge... incompatible charger" message. It was not even plugged into a charger. Tried cleaning, the (already clean) charging contacts, removing the battery, making mystical signs, etc., but no joy. At some point it went into a recovery mode and tried to download software - it actually charged several %points during that time which tells me this is software "feature".

My phone is doing the same thing. I'm very frustrated as I have the same chargers that I originally got with my phone. Both my car and wall charger are not working. I'm super annoyed. What do I do?

I noticed that the charger works - but only in ultra power saving mode.

The next morning, after fully charging it, went back to standard mode and the charger(s) were working again.

This is definitely a software bug.

The same issue is happening with my Galaxy s5. My phone is displaying a message saying the charger is not compatible and to use original charger, which I am already using.

-I'm using the original charger

-no new downloads/updates

-No damage to the phone or charger of any kind (noticeable to me)

I too am suddenly having incompatable charger issues using the charger I have used for last 5 months. Changing batteries does not help. Need a solution soon. Samsung S5., (model number SM-G900V), Build number LRx21T.G900VVRU2BOK3)

What happens when you attempt to charge the phone? Have you tried using a different charger? Has there been any damage to the phone or charging port? When did you start seeing this error message?

I have a note 5, and my phone has been doing the same thing! Same notice on screen. I learned years ago to ONLY use the charger that comes with the phone, yet I have this problem! I went to the veizon store and not only did they blame it on my charger but talked me into a $60 wireless charger to solve the problem. Which turns out isn't even the Samsung charger!! They sold me the more expensive verizon charger which totally killed my phone to the point it wouldn't turn on or charge. And once I finally got a charge it takes approx 10 hrs to charge! Same issues.. The right thing for Verizon to do would be to acknowledge this is a Samsung issue and NOT try to profit off of their customers by SELLING us more chargers..especially when we are under a yr of owning and still paying on these expensive phones and plans. I have absolutely NO new apps or apps period besides the ones forced on me that I do not want by Verizon that update every time my phone gets a new update...very disappointed. I'd like my phone fixed and a replacement Samsung wall charger. I'd also like to able to return the $60 wireless charger I was talked into that I do not want!! It's frustrating to see these issues have been going on for a couple years now with Samsung devices, yet Verizon doesn't know what causes the issue??

So glad I found this thread, as i am experiencing the same issue. EVERY charger I use throws up the "incompatible charger" error. And before Verizon replies, yes I have tried my original Samsung charger, my Amazon Kindle charger, my stereo charger, and several others. And NO i have not doused it in gasoline and lit ablaze, nor has any wine, beer, juice, or liquid of any kind infultrated the charging port. And let me put your mind to ease as I have not dropped it or punted it over a bridge. This has been going on for 3 days now and the reason I know it's the DEVICE and not the charger or battery is that I have been trading batteries. I charge my battery with my Samsung charger in a different device and then swap (which is very tedious) back and forth. I called Verizon Tech support today and was instructed to do safe mode... no dice. So I backed up everything to my cloud and did a factory reset, and NOTHING. The tech told me he saw there was nothing wrong with my charger (as my phone was recognizing, just didn't "like" it).

He told me that since I am 1 year and 7 months into my contract (5 months away from upgrade) that I am unfortunately 7 months passed the warranty. Well, how convenient for them to make their warranty half as long as their contract... He asked me if I would like to upgrade early, WELL SURE WHY NOT.... here's the catch, they can't let me buy the phone and sign another 2 year... Id have to do their pay as you go which ends up costing more in the long run.

I'm so frustrated. I don't want to pay extra for a phone that I shouldn't even have to purchase. I don't want to use an old phone until September. I don't want to switch batteries twice a day from another device. I want the device I have to operate the way I purchased it and the way the manufacturer states it should, is that too much to ask?

I have had the same problem only today with my S5 and my new S6 edge. Use the old S5 when this one is on the fritz or whatever. But today no matter what I plug the S5 in to it won't charge. Nothing new, no new water damage, or anything. All chargers for tight, and charge the S6 edge. Not super important since I mainly use it for games and as a backup phone, but annoying none the less. Would like to resolve without having to buy an external charger

I just recently started having this problem. I take very good care of my device. No water damage, no drops and never used any other charger until this "incompatible charger" message appeared. I do know other people that have had no problem charging their S5 with other chargers.so I tried other chargers.Same message. I've read this entire thread. Verizon support you should do the same. You keep asking the same questions yet giving no answers. It"s [removal required by the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service].I called Verizon support spoke with a rep and was told that my charger was still under warranty my device is not of course, so they could send me a new charger at a cost of course.I know its not the charger. it's in perfect condition. Customers have been having this problem for a year now. Is it so much to ask for a fix instead of trying to sell us more junk that doesn't fix the issue??

This morning out of nowhere, my S5 decided that it didn't want to be compatible with my original charger. It is frustrating, especially the fact that I have only 30% available, and I feel like it would be nice to actually have the customer support give us ideas of what we could do to fix the issue, and not just tell us how sorry they are.

I have done EVERYTHING that Customer service has asked of everyone, and it is not working still.

I need to figure this out sooner than later!
