Why am I not receiving notifications of Voicemail?

Someone told me they left me voicemail, but I didn't get a notification so I sent myself a voicemail and I didn't receive notification of that one either. So I called Voicemail and low and behold I had 9 voicemail that I had no idea even existed. What is wrong?
