I have multiple contacts (originally imported in store from old phone. In some cases there are as many as 6 duplicates. Anyway, whenever I need to make a call or open contacts, the phone locks up
Contacts are a crucial part of your phone, espeically as most of us don't recall many numbers, Martstephen. We're here to help. What make and model phone do you have? When did it start locking up? Where are your contacts currently backed up (i.e. Verizon Cloud, Google, etc)?
