when i plug my s4 into my desktop it does not open verizon software to view the drives. how do i get my desktop to be able to copy photos from my phone?
Sounds like you might need the USB drivers from Samsung for your PC.

The Verizon Update Assistant has no bearing on how your phone drive is read by the PC. UA is only for updating the p[hone via Verizon servers.
With the correct drivers installed, you should see the phone being read as a drive by the PC shortly after the Verizon UA is read then closed.
