I have read the instruction on how to remove the fingerprint lock but it will not allow me to remove it
Depending on applications you have installed you may not be able to remove lock completely but you should be able to change it to a Pattern, PIN or Password. I assume you are going to Settings -> Lock screen -> Screen lock
From there it will require a swipe to unlock and you should have option to change it to something else as mentioned above.
Go to Settings - Security - Clear Credentials. Then you can remove that lock type and choose another.
