Troubleshooting SMS Messages

I just upgraded to a Blackerry Curve 8530.  I can receive SMS messages, but cannot reply or initiate them.  I have read through everything that came with the phone, but haven't been able to find anything that helps me solve the problem.  Messaging is a part of my voice/data plan.

 

Can anyone help me solve this?

Mine seems to be random people..usually longer messages.  It displays the beginning of the message, but sometimes won't open the message for me to reply to it! 

Gets annoying.  Even after deleting the person from my contacts list, and their messages..it seems to continue.  I pull my battery every morning too.  So, not sure how to fix or a work around.
