Back to Moto Droid - Speed Dial?

After a brief and eventually dubious flirtation with a Windows Mobile 6.5 phone, I was able to get a Motorola Droid and I'm really liking it so far.

I need to delve into the manuals and owner info, but for now, I need to ask about speed dialing. I've been digging around and I cannot find a way to assign a number on the keypad. Is this feature not a part of the Moto Droid or am I missing something?

The Moto Droid does not have a speed dial, but it does have a feature called Direct Dial. Unlike speed dial, direct dial does not use the numbered phone pad. Direct dial is a shortcut on one of your home screens. If you tap that shortcut, it will automatically dial that number. To set up Direct Dial, on your home screen (make sure there is room on if for another widget/shortcut) tap the menu key. Then tap add; tap shortcuts, tap direct dial, then tap the contact that you want to have the shortcut for. Not great for a lot of contacts, but good for those few you call the most.

There is an app called "speed dial" by CRinUS for only 99 cents. You can add shortcuts on the home screen to call. You can download another app called QuickDial. You are allowed to choose 36 of your contacts/apps to get really quick access too.Just one single tap and it dials it for you.

I didn't really go anywhere, I still perused the forums, but we have been running VERY hard this year, great problems to have.

For some reason, I was playing with the Omnia II one day and thinking that it might integrate better with my Word and Excel files.

Well, that's what I get for thinking.

That thing worked fine...for a couple of days. The more you used it, the more gakked up and slow it got. Re-initialize it and all is well....again, for a couple of days. I had really gotten frustrated with it and the Verizon guy (we have a GREAT store here, thankfully) found a way to get me a re-conditioned Moto Droid for considerably less than the full retail price I would have to pay because of my non-NE2 status. And this Moto Droid, with the 2.1 software, has made me a serious believer in the Android system. I'm having a blast with the voice-to-text feature!
