My God I've taken a HUGE leap backward from my GS4 if this is true. Anyone know the trick to making both work at the same time?

You need to turn on Advanced Voice 1.0 on My Verizon if it is not already on, and then on the phone turn on VoLTE (LTE Voice and Data). Then you will have voice and data. The limitation is you must be on LTE for simultaneous voice/data. This will be the standard on all phones going forward.
call in and ask for HD voice to be added to your account
Thanks Weth. That's just bizarre that it's not defaulted to "on" out of the box. I didn't have to do anything other than turn it on with the handset itself.
I appreciate the assistance. I really liked my S4 and the only reason I "upgraded" was because I had intermittent hotspot capability and I need it a lot. This one seems to be better. The slight additional girth is going to take a little getting used to but overall I like it. I wasn't happy about no SD card but at the end of the day it wasn't like programs totally went over to SD...so I didn't save anything to speak of other than the space for pix and vids and those I can always pop over to Dropbox. This is a 64gig S6 (non-edge).

This is because if you are in a fringe 4G area changing from 4G to 3G back to 4G, you will have an increasing likelihood of dropped calls. Verizon probably thinks it is better to have a FEW customers complain about no simultaneous voice/data than a LOT of customers complain about increased dropped calls with their new phone.
