can't effect a wireless connection to internet

Although I successfully connect to a wireless network (have done this with two different wireless networks), I cannot connect to the internet via any type of program. Is there a priority/service conflict with the Verizon data connection that I need to change? Can't find any info about this issue...

if you can't connect to the internet, you're not connected to the wi-fi, whether public or encrypted.
