Device Software Modified alert, Unlocked "Custom" Icon on Restart

Today I received a notification from VZ Protect. The threat detected was: Device Software Modified. I was having trouble viewing emails, so I restarted my phone. Upon rebooting, I noticed that there was the word "Custom" along with an unlocked/open padlock icon. The phone functions perfectly well, but this has me concerned.

I have opened VZ Protect again and the alert does not appear in "Threat History." In fact, nothing appears in "Threat History."

I have restarted the phone twice and the unlocked/open padlock icon has NOT reappeared.

Does anyone have specific knowledge as to why this has happened and if I should be concerned?

I certainly understand your concern to see something so different when restarting your phone. I would be too. Can you think of any recent changes or software alterations that may have been made to the device? If that only showed up once and hasn't again it may have just been an error but we want to make sure!

Thank you Andrew. A day or two prior to the alert, I did update some applications via the Google Play Store. Other than that, I cannot think of any changes.

That error message or alert is just part of Verizon's Support and Protect app. It's a pay-for service with a monthly fee. It is Verizon's version of a pop-up ad, only it is promoting their product.
