I am missing more than half of the photos that were on my phone. How do I find where they went, and is there any way to recover them?

I noticed today that I'm missing all the pictures that were in my gallery dated from late September 2015 and older. I have looked everywhere I know to look and cannot find them anywhere. I turned the phone off, removed the battery and the SD card and let it sit for a few minutes, but that did not help. I do not use the cloud and did not delete the pictures. No message indicating storage issues, haven't done an update recently, I am at a loss. Help, please! Thank you!
