My company recently switched from Sprint to Verizon. Although the Droid was enticing I am going to have to return it. I have viewed the other posts and agree, it is a very very expensive toy that has no utility in the business world. I fault Google for having the hubris to believe that they did not have to provide a seamless connection to the most commonly used e-mail client and contact manage out there Microsoft Outlook. It doesn't matter whether or not Outlook is the best. What matters is that it is readily available to all and is probably the one that most phone users are capable of using. When the Verizon tech tried to port all of my contact over to the Droid, my contacts were imported alphabetized by first name and all of the extensive notes that I have accumulated over the years on my Palm/Outlook were left behind.
Using Google mail is a non starter as I will not invest the time to do a comma delimited tedious upload to Google and then every time I wish to synchronize my computer with my phone have to do it all over again.
I also will not invest in third party software nor will I use Microsoft exchange just for the privilege of using the Droid - it isn't that great when other platforms exist that give me all of the functionality that I need without having to use a work-around.
Perhaps Google should rethink what they are doing and try to please their customers or are they as bad as Microsoft shoving stuff down our throats and expecting us to like it just because they are Google?
