Regarding the Samsung Calendar events etc. is there a way to see only your own calendar and not the other person's calendar events even though the 2 phones are on the same Verizon account?
There ae many calendar options on how you can share with your spouse. Setting up accounts on Google services or other programs would allow you to accomplish what you were looking for.
