That depends. What phone do you have? How are you using IM? here's a quick summary - post back if you have more questions.

MOBILE IM on your feature phone or multi-media phone, after the initial download and installation (which uses less than a MB of data) is entirely text messaging. All the messages sent and received are counted as text messages. No data usage is charged.

If you have a smartphone, android, or other data capable phone and are using a text messaging app OTHER THAN Mobile IM, it WILL use data to run the app.But smartphones and others require the unlimited data package, so it wouldn't matter that it's using data, and you would use the app rather than a texting package to do your text messaging.
