How Can I Listen To My Voice Mails On Speakerphone?

I'm new to the android phone and am stymied by my ability to listen to visual voicemail messages. if i select one, and hit the play button, once i put the phone up to my ear the phone stops playing the message and the screen goes dark/locks. this is highly annoying and i havent found a way to stop this from happening.

i'd be ok with a way to play the message by turning on speakerphone, but i don't see how to do that either.

can someone help an android newbie?

We want to be sure your voicemail is working the way it should kevinroyalty. We are happy to help. When did this issue begin? There is a speaker icon to the left of the play button when you are listening to a message. What happens when you choose that icon?
