Moto Z Force suddenly won't connect to my HP Envy laptop

I've been connecting for months with no problem. Suddenly I get the following error in my laptop's device manager.

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

Then when I attempt to update the device drive, I get this:

"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it." (Below that) MTP Device

How do I get this resolved?
