You cannot tell if a message was read or not, all you can determine is that is was received on the phone you sent it to. And that is only on Verizon phones. You can only tell if messages sent to another carrier were successfully sent from your phone, but not if they were received on the other end.
The symbol at the corner of the envelope will tell you the status of your sent messages.
