google contacts app

My contacts app has quit working about 2 months ago and don't know why. It's not necessarily an issue, because I can still get to my contacts by way of the phone app. Is there a reason why it has quit working? I have not installed anything on the phone and I did try turning off the phone and removing the battery to reset the phone to no avail.

We always want you to be able to connect to your contacts. What type of error message do you receive when you attempt to open your contacts? Please power the device off and remove the battery. Then place back in and power the device on. Keep us posted on your progress.

It states 'Unfortunately contacts has stopped.'

I have already powered the device off and pulled the battery. that was the first thing I did before I came to the forums. I know it usually clears most things up with android.
