I am going to get a used droid smartphone from my friend. I am curious if i can use it with only WiFi without any 3G connectiorn of data plan.
Do you have any idea on this?

Depends on how you want to use it.
Verizon will not let you activate on their service without a data plan, which start at $9.99/month.
If you just want to use it solely for emergencies, I believe that you can call 911 with a cell phone that has not been activated.
If you don't want to use it as a phone (calls and texts) then you'll be fine just using it on wifi. Granted you could set up google voice and that would solve your texting problem. Calling is a little more difficult.
